Kernels fall to Peoria in 9th

PEORIA, Ill. - Nick Thompson's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Peoria a 5-4 victory over the Kernels on Tuesday night at Dozer Park in the rubber game of their series.

The Chiefs scored two runs in the eighth inning to tie the game after the Kernels had worked for a 4-2 edge.

Harrison Bader singled to right field with two outs in the ninth inning for Peoria. He advanced to second on Brian O'Keefe's base on balls. Thompson's liner to left scored Bader for the game-winning run. It was Thompson's third hit of the game.

Zack Tillery (5-5) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The Kernels pushed a run across in the first inning. Sean Miller began the game with a double into right-center and scored on a one-out single to left by T.J. White.

Cedar Rapids took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI triple to deep center by Austin Diemer. It scored Pat Kelly, who singled one batter earlier.

Thompson put Peoria on the board in the bottom of the second with his team-best 12th home run. Peoria tied the game, 2-2, in the third inning. Bader doubled sharply into the left field corner to begin the inning and reached third on a wild pitch. He scored on O'Keefe's sacrifice fly to center.

The Kernels jumped back in front 3-2 in the sixth inning with Miller's second double. His RBI double with two outs split the gap in left-center and scored Zack Larson, who drew a walk to start the frame.

Cedar Rapids extended its lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning with a pair of two-out hits. Alex Real doubled down the left field line before scoring on Brett Doe's single to right-center.

The Chiefs tied the game 4-4 in the eighth inning on a pair of wild pitches by reliever Yorman Landa. Landa was charged with a blown save as he allowed two runs on one hit over two innings.

Sam Clay tossed six innings for the Kernels as the starter, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two.

The Kernels continue their road trip Wednesday night at Wisconsin against the Timber Rattlers.
