Football playoff pairings set by IHSAA

PDF

It took until 2 a.m. Saturday morning, but the first round of the high school football playoffs were finally announced by the IHSAA.

Six Metro teams have qualified for the playoffs for the second straight year. Four of them are set to play home games in the opening round Wednesday night, although Jefferson's "home" game will be in Mount Vernon due to overcrowding at Kingston Stadium.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Washington both claimed Class 4A district championships and will play in a doubleheader at Kingston.

Kennedy (9-0) plays Clinton (5-4) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Washington (8-1) meets Cedar Falls (6-3) in the nightcap at 8 p.m.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson, the district runner-up to Kennedy, also earned a home game, but with Kingston Stadium already hosting two games, the J-Hawks (6-3) were forced to find a place to play.

Jefferson will play at Ash Park on the Cornell campus in Mount Vernon at 5:30 p.m. against Dubuque Senior (4-5).

Linn-Mar (4-5) and Prairie (4-5) both earned No. 3 seeds and will be on the road. The Lions will play at Iowa City High (6-3) while the Prairie Hawks will also be in Iowa City, playing at Iowa City West (3-6). Both games will start at 7 p.m.

In Class 3A, Xavier (8-0) will play a home game against Waverly-Shell Rock (6-3) at Saints Field at 7 p.m.
