No.6 KCC women fall to No.2 team

PDF

The Kirkwood women's basketball team bumped off a top-5 opponent in the Kirkwood Classic Friday night, but the Eagles were not able to do it again Saturday night.

The sixth-ranked Eagles lost to No. 2 Illinois Central, 76-64, in the final game of the two-day tournament at Johnson Hall Saturday.

Kirkwood defeated No. 5 Parkland, 72-50, Friday night in the first round of the tournament and finished the competitive event with an even split.

Emma Heisler popped in seven 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead Illinois Central against the Eagles Saturday afternoon with an uncanny display of marksmanship.

"They're pretty good. They have a nice team," said Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl. "I didn't think they'd hit that many 3's. They ran some good stuff and we didn't guard it very well."

Kirkwood center Madison Wood, who has enjoyed some big games for the Eagles this season, was called for two fouls in the first 2 minutes, 2 seconds of the ballgame and sat on the bench for the rest of the half.

Kirkwood trailed 34-27 at intermission and pulled with 53-49 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Illinois Central scored 11 straight points to take command at 64-49. Illinois Central built a 69-51 lead and coasted to victory from there.

Kirkwood shot only 30 percent from the field and had trouble guarding the perimeter, but Muhl was not totally discouraged.

"I saw some good things," he said. "I mean, this team is a work in progress. It really is. But overall, you shoot 30 percent from the floor isn't good enough.

"It's part of the learning curve with the group," he said. "It's going to take a little bit of time."

Cedar Rapids Prairie grad Cyerra Hutchins scored the first 10 points of the game for Kirkwood to give the Eagles a 10-6 lead, but she scored only two more points and finished with 12. Caitlin Sudduth led Kirkwood with 14 points.

Illinois Central raised its record to 3-1. The Eagles fell to 3-3.
