Beyer accepts offer from Hawkeyes

Cancel the commitment to North Dakota State. Forget the trip to Nebraska this week. Chalk up another victory for Kirk Ferentz.

Kennedy football star Shaun Beyer is going to be an Iowa Hawkeye.

Beyer visited Iowa on Wednesday and made the big announcement on his social media account.

"Extremely blessed to receive an offer and to commit to the Iowa Hawkeyes!," Beyer declared. "Truly a dream come true!"

Beyer committed to FCS power North Dakota State over the summer and was scheduled to attend Iowa's game at Nebraska this Friday as a guest of the Cornhuskers, who offered him a scholarship a few weeks ago. Instead, he'll wear black-and-gold in college.

Beyer is one of the most versatile football players in the state, capable of playing just about every position on the field and excelling at everything he tried. He helped Kennedy as a wide receiver, tight end, running back, quarterback, defensive end, linebacker, defensive back and punter this season.

Beyer even tried to return a punt, but was called for a penalty when he called for a fair catch and started to run with the ball, proving once again that nobody is perfect.

Beyer was named the captain of the Class 4A all-state team by the Iowa Newspaper Association Wednesday and was listed as the "utility" player on the all-state team itself, indicative of his overall ability.

Beyer helped the Cougars enjoy their best season in school history with a 13-1 record and the first trip to the Class 4A finals in school annals. The Cougars won 13 straight games before falling to Dowling, 41-10, in the championship game.

Beyer scored Kennedy's only touchdown against Dowling with a 20-yard leaping catch in the end zone. He also punted five times for a 53.8-yard average in the championship game, including a 76-yard boot.

Some analysts think Beyer's best position in college will be at tight end, but he's proven he can excel at just about any spot on the field. He also could compete for the punting job at Iowa with his strong leg.

Beyer currently measures 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, but has the frame to gain 25 pounds for college football without losing his speed. He also is an outstanding track athlete and has cleared 6-foot-7 in the high jump.

Beyer caught 41 passes for 816 yards and 10 touchdowns this year. He carried the ball 51 times for 618 yards and five touchdowns as a running quarterback and tailback. He also completed 5 of 6 passes for 45 yards.

On defense, Beyer made 56 tackles with seven sacks. He had a big 88-yard interception return for a touchdown against Washington in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs and averaged more than 43 yards with his punts.

The national signing period begins in February.
