Bohannon nets 1,000, but Lions struggle

Jordan Bohannon joined his three older brothers in the 1,000 point club at Linn-Mar High School on Tuesday night, but the Lions struggled and there was no reason to celebrate the milestone.

The Waukee Warriors opened a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter and dumped Linn-Mar, 63-52, in the season opener at Linn-Mar.

Bohannon scored 12 points and raised his career total to 1,010, but he netted only two points in the second half (both on free throws) and was called for a technical foul when he slammed the ball to the floor when a call went against the Lions.

"That was totally my bad," he said contritely. "I was frustrated."

Jason Bohannon, who was Iowa's Mr. Basketball in 2006, poured in 1,679 points during his career at Linn-Mar. Matt Bohannon, now starring at Northern Iowa, collected 1,065 points with the Lions. And Zach Bohannon scored 1,033 points at Linn-Mar.

All told, the four Bohannons have scored 4,787 points for the Lions.

Jason Bohannon and Matt Bohannon were in the stands Tuesday, but they saw Linn-Mar struggle for most of the night. The Lions, a small team that has to rely on its outside shooting, launched 35 3-pointers and made only eight of them.

Meanwhile, Waukee attacked the basket and fed the ball to 6-foot-6 center Jacob Rau for 20 points. The Warriors made a high percentage of their shots and the Lions were just the opposite.

"They run their stuff really, really well and they run it at a fast pace," Linn-Mar coach Chris Robertson said. "If you lose focus or discipline a little bit defensively, they make you pay.

"We weren't very good," Robertson said. "We weren't very good in the halfcourt either way, offense or defense. We weren't in a very good rhythm, so we have a few days to think about that.

"Frustrating night, but sometimes that's where you learn the most."

Jared Printy, who transferred to Linn-Mar from Cedar Rapids Washington, hit four 3-pointers and led the Lions with 17 points. Beau Klostermann scored 11 points, but had a rough night from the field.

Waukee reached the Class 4A state tournament last year and finished with an 18-6 record. Based on the way the Warriors played Tuesday night, they could be headed in that direction again.

"I thought my kids really played hard," Waukee coach Justin Ohl said. "That's what we talked about. Just play hard and give a great effort.

"Our whole thing was, let's not question our effort, and I thought we did a great job in that area."

Waukee blasted to a 60-38 lead with 4:40 left in the game. The Lions scored 14 points in the last 3 1/2 minutes to make the score look a little better.

Bohannon hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and had 10 points at halftime, but he did not make a single bucket in the second half. Waukee played good defense on the 6-foot-1 guard and gave him few open looks.

"He's so good," Ohl said. "We didn't want to give him anything easy. I thought our guys really rose to the occasion and made him earn it."

Bohannon was not happy with the way he played.

"I didn't work off the ball like I probably should have," he said. "We really didn't have much flow tonight. That will come.

"I'm the only returning starter. It's four new guys learning the system. We're all just trying to learn each other."
