Sellers wins Metro Spotlight Award

Lela Sellers of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Sellers, a 5-foot-11 senior, is one of the top basketball players in the state and has committed to play college ball at Liberty University, which is an NCAA Division I school.

Sellers had a big weekend for the Cougars in two victories over ranked teams. It began Friday night when she poured in 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 65-61 victory at fifth-ranked Iowa City High.

On Saturday night, Sellers scored 13 points and snared 17 rebounds in a 54-48 triumph over 11th-ranked Pleasant Valley at Kennedy. The Cougars have a 3-1 record this season and are ranked 12th in Class 5A, with the only loss coming on the road at No. 1 Waukee.

Sellers is averaging 20 points and 11.8 rebounds. She ranks fourth in Class 5A in scoring and is No. 1 in rebounding. She also has eight assists and seven steals this season and has made 6 of 13 3-pointers.

Sellers averaged 14.5 points and 5.2 rebounds in her first season at Kennedy last year after moving here from Minnesota. She was named second team all-state by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
