Prairie bowlers win Spotlight Award

All of the stars on the Cedar Rapids Prairie bowling team are the winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

The Hawks are enjoying a terrific season and are favored to win the Class 3A state title at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines on Wednesday.

Prairie has compiled a perfect 11-0 record this season and the Hawks boast the highest scoring average in the state at 2,931.8 pins per match.

The Hawks blew away the competition at the state qualifier meet in Marshalltown last Tuesday with a marvelous performance by the entire team with a score of 3,270.

Sabrina Keiper rolled a two-game series of 462 to lead the Hawks in Marshalltown, followed closely by Mikayla Hite (450), Jade Klinefelter (449), Ashley Sundstrom (426) and Rylee Blood (423). Those were five of the top-8 qualifier scores from around the state and makes them all eligible to compete for the individual state title in Des Moines.

Klinefelter had the high game for Prairie at the state qualifier with a 257, Hite had a 255 and Keiper a 248.

Four Hawks are ranked in the top-20 in the state in per-game average. Blood is No. 5 at 199.2, Sundstrom is No. 8 at 196.7, Keiper is No. 10 at 194.9 and Kaitlyn Early is No. 19 at 188.7. Early bowled in the state qualifier last week, but her score was not needed in the team standings.

The Hawks are coached by Don Willfong.
