Matt Mims of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Mims, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, is a starting guard for the Xavier basketball team that will play in the Class 3A state tournament in Des Moines this week.

The 10th-ranked Saints (16-8) will meet third-ranked Spirit Lake (21-3) in the opening round Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.

Mims has enjoyed a productive season for a sophomore. He's averaging 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.2 steals. Mims is shooting 47.5 percent overall from the field, 39.7 percent on 3-pointers and 81.2 percent on free throws.

Xavier tied for the Mississippi Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season, giving the Saints their first MVC boys basketball crown in school history.
