Linn-Mar is ranked eighth and Xavier 10th in the first Associated Press Iowa high school football poll of the season.

Both teams are ranked in Class 4A and both qualified for the playoffs last season. Three other Metro teams that reached the playoffs also received votes in the poll: Kennedy and Washington in Class 4A and Marion in 3A.

While a few teams kicked off their seasons last weekend, the majority of teams play their first games this weekend. Linn-Mar opens Thursday against Jefferson at Kingston Stadium. Xavier plays Kennedy on Friday at Kingston, Washington plays at Prairie on Friday and Marion is at Mount Vernon on Friday.

Cedar Falls and Iowa City High are ranked 1-2 in the Class 4A poll. West Des Moines Valley, which beat Dowling 28-21 last Friday, is No. 3.

Sioux City Heelan, a 20-18 winner over Sioux City East last Friday, is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. Defending state champion Solon is No. 2.
