Garman, Parry making their moves in college

Jer Garman and David Parry helped Linn-Mar High School turn its football program around during their all-state careers with the Lions.

Now they're on the move in college.

Garman, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound true freshman at the University of North Dakota, has made a quick impression on the Fighting Sioux and is expected to play Thursday night in their season opener against Drake.

Parry, a 6-2, 304-pound redshirt freshman at Stanford, was given a full scholarship this week and is listed as a second-string defensive lineman for Saturday's opener against San Jose State.

Garman graduated from Linn-Mar this past spring after a record-breaking career with the Lions. Parry graduated in 2010 after being named the team's MVP and an all-state lineman.

Garman rushed for 4,474 yards and scored 52 touchdowns at Linn-Mar. Considered too small by major college teams, he enrolled at North Dakota this summer and has jumped into the picture as a running back and kick returner.

"Jer is pretty special," North Dakota Coach Chris Mussman told the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald. "We think he's going to be a good player."

Garman is not listed on the depth chart, but a school spokesman told the Metro Sports Report that he'll play against Drake.

"He can make a difference for us," Mussman said. "He makes us better. And I've said all along, if a kid makes us better, he'll play."

Garman scored 29 touchdowns and tallied 174 points at Linn-Mar last season, breaking Mississippi Valley Conference records set by former Iowa City High star Tim Dwight.

Parry enrolled at Stanford last year as a preferred walk-on. He was still a walk-on when practice began this year, but was told Monday the coaching staff has decided to put him on scholarship.

Stanford's new coach this sesaon is David Shaw. He succeeded Jim Harbaugh when Harbaugh left Stanford to become the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
