Long helps Eagles split with DMACC

The Kirkwood Eagles needed a starting pitcher to go deep into a ballgame to salvage the final game of a four-game series with DMACC Tuesday at the Kirkwood field.

Peyton Long answered the call.

Long tossed eight strong innings as the Eagles trimmed DMACC, 4-2, in the second game of Tuesday's twinbill.

DMACC won the first game, 5-2.

Long allowed only one run on six hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. He threw 109 pitches and gave the bullpen a much-needed rest in  the last game of the series.

Kirkwood lost the first three games of the series, and none of their starting pitchers lasted more than 3 1/3 innings in any of those games.

Kirkwood Coach Todd Rima gave the ball to Long on a gray, blustery day to save the Eagles and the 6-foot-4 freshman from Des Moines gave his team the lift it needed.

Tuesday's nightcap was tied, 1-1, after five innings. Kirkwood took a 2-1 lead in the sixth and made it 4-1 in the seventh with two more runs.

Kaden Wadle pitched the ninth inning for Kirkwood, allowed one run and  got the save.

Colin Kreiter hit a solo home run in the 4-2 victory. Korry Howell and Lorenzo Elion had two hits. Cal Clark hit a double and scored two runs  for the Eagles.

Howell, General McArthur, Ellison Hanna and Kreiter had RBIs in the victory.

Tuesday's split left Kirkwood at 19-10 overall and 5-3 in the conference. DMACC left town at 11-14 overall and 4-4 in the league.
