Registration begins for expanded softball league

The new Iowa Women's Softball League got off to a great start in Cedar Rapids this summer with four teams and 60 players.

Now we are delighted to officially announce that the league plans to expand into Central Iowa next summer and have 10 teams in 2018.

Registration begins today at the MetroSportsReport.com website. Simply click on the registration link and get started.

The Iowa Women's Softball League was created this year to give active college softball players a league of their own during the summer. It is the only collegiate fast-pitch league in Iowa and was warmly received by the players, college coaches and community.

Based on the results this year, it convinced us to expand the program in 2018 and reach even more players.

We plan to have six teams in the Eastern Division in Cedar Rapids next summer with games at Kirkwood Community College, Coe College and  perhaps Mount Mercy University.

We also plan to have four teams in the Central Division with games at Simpson College in Indianola and the Iowa State University Recreation Field in Ames.

Players can choose their division on the registration form.

We will play a 16-game season in 2018 with a series of eight doubleheaders. The dates are June 3-10-17-24 and July 8-15-22-29. We will not play during the first week of July due to the holiday.

The player fee is $100 and may be paid by using PayPal when registering. Each player will get 16 games, a team jersey and a league T-shirt.

All of our softball stories are archived on the website. Click on the "MSR summer softball" tab at the top of the home page to find all the previous stories and registration links.

Please help us inform players about the league. Scholarships are available. All anyone has to do is ask. There is no paperwork.

We encourage players to enroll now and reserve a place in the league. We will give a full $100 refund to anyone who registers and then is unable to play due to injury, travel, summer job or any other reason, with no questions asked.

It's better to enroll as soon as possible and save a spot in the program, rather than waiting too long and possibly missing a chance to play because all the spots are filled. We plan to have 14 players per team with a total of 140 players in the program.

Graduating seniors are eligible for the league, even though they will have finished their college eligibility by next June. Former college players are eligible as well, by invitation only.

We used a continuous batting order and free defensive substitution this season and it worked very well, ensuring that everyone had equal playing time. We also had a time limit on games to protect the pitchers.

We had players from 25 different colleges in the program this year with a nice mixture of NCAA D1, NCAA D2, NCAA D3, NAIA and junior colleges. Anyone who is playing college softball is eligible for the program, regardless of where they live. We had players from Illinois,  Missouri and New Jersey this year along with all the Iowans.
