King sparks No. 14 Eagles by Mesa

OTTUMWA - Chris King popped in 22 points and dished out 13 assists Friday as the 14th-ranked Kirkwood Eagles began the season with an 87-77 victory over Mesa Community College in the opening round of the  Indian Hills Classic in Ottumwa.

King, a 6-foot point guard from Des Moines, also grabbed five rebounds in the victory and hit four 3-point shots.

Carlo Marble made three 3-pointers for Kirkwood and scored 19 points.  Doug Wilson scored 15 points and Jay Small added 11 points with three 3-pointers.

The Eagles made 14 3-pointers in the ballgame in 31 attempts.

Brent Kimbrel topped Mesa with 19 points.

Kirkwood faces 17th-ranked Johnson County in the second round of the  tournament Saturday at 4:30.

MESA (77): Washington 2 1-1 5, Kimbrel 7 3-3 19, Arms 4 0-0 10,  Ross-Jones 1 1-2 3, Franklin 3 0-0 7, Cheney 1 4-4 6, Beyers 6 2-3 17,  Newman 4 0-0 8, Patterson 1 0-0 2. Totals 29 11-13 77.

KIRKWOOD (87): Stansbury 1 3-4 5, Kale 2 2-2 8, Marble 8 0-1 19, Small  4 0-0 11, Ross 2 0-0 6, King 6 6-6 22, Taylor 0 1-2 1, Johnson 0 0-0  0, Storey 0 0-0 0, Wilson 7 1-2 15. Totals 30 13-17 87.
