Norway, Red Top sweep IVL games

Norway and Red Top swept their Iowa Valley League doubleheaders on  Sunday, creating a logjam in the standings.

Williamsburg and Norway are tied for first place with 4-2 records  after three weeks. Red Top and the Stars are both 3-3, with Walford  and Watkins in contention at 2-4.

NORWAY SWEEPS WALFORD

NORWAY - The Norway Bandits received excellent pitching Sunday and  swept their doubleheader from Walford, 4-1 and 7-0.

Colby Carmichael took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the  opener before allowing a run on three singles.

Mitch Walser belted a three-run homer for Norway in the first game.  Christian Stekl had two hits and scored twice. Braedon Brown had two  hits and Riley Braughton contributed an RBI single.

Tony Salato and Jordan Hanlon combined on a three-hit shutout for the  Bandits in the second game, with Salato pitching the first five innings.

Chili Moseley scored three runs for Norway. Travis Mueller hit a  majestic tape-measure home run for the Bandits. Braughton had three  hits and scored two runs.

RED TOP SWEEPS WATKINS

WATKINS - Red Top collected a pair of one-run victories over Watkins  on Sunday.

Ben Rettenmeier pitched a complete for the Toppers in a 3-2 victory in  the opener, allowing two runs on three hits. Luke Franzenburg tossed a  complete game for the Mudhens and was the hard-luck loser, allowing  just five base hits.

Ethan Copeland, Cal Clark and Nick Day had RBI singles for Red Top.  Watkins scored its two runs on a double by DJ Utley, followed by  singles by Nick Brown and Chris Krystoviak.

Red Top grabbed the nightcap, 5-4, in eight innings. The Toppers  scored the tie-breaking run on a close play at the plate on a  fielder's choice. Kirby Kerr got the victory in relief.

Casey Pauli had three hits and two RBIs for Red Top. Utley had a  two-run single and Jonny Frese had an RBI single for Watkins. Cale  Jamesson tied the game for Watkins in the sixth inning, 4-4, with an  RBI double.
