3-way logjam in IVL standings

Williamsburg, Norway and the Stars are all tied for first place in the Iowa Valley League with 5-3 records after four weeks of the 2018 regular season.

Walford is just another game back at 4-4, followed by Red Top at 3-5 and Watkins at 2-6 in the compact standings.

The Stars swept Watkins on Sunday. Walford swept Red Top, while Norway and Williamsburg split their twinbill.

STARS SWEEP WATKINS

The Stars flashed terrific pitching in their sweep at Watkins, taking  the first game 4-0 and winning the nightcap 4-1.

Austin Czerwiec tossed a four-hit shutout in the 4-0 triumph in the  opener. Lucas Larson blasted a three-run homer in the second inning when the Stars scored all four of their runs against Luke Franzenburg.

Alex Hayden and Chico Lizarraga had singles before Larson cleared the  bases with his home run. Franzenburg pitched a complete game for Watkins.

Cody Bell tossed six strong innings for the Stars in the 4-1 victory  in the second game. Lizarraga had two key hits and a two-run single  for the winners. Hayden also had an RBI single.

Chris Farley had two hits for Watkins in the second game and Brady Stramer had an RBI double.

NORWAY, WILLIAMSBURG SPLIT

The Norway Bandits and Williamsburg Red Sox traded a pair of victories in Williamsburg.

Christian Stekl collected four hits and two RBIs for Norway in a 6-3  victory in the opener. He also scored twice. Tony Salato was the winning pitcher for the Bandits.

Tanner Jansen (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Williamsburg after beginning the year with three straight wins. Nick Suppel belted a two-run homer for the Red Sox. Nolan Arp had a double and solo homer for Williamsburg.

The Red Sox claimed the nightcap, 4-0, on a combined shutout by four pitchers. Zach Kammin tossed the first three innings, Dustin Meierotto  took care of the next two frames, then Travis Bowman and Colin Sexton  pitched one scoreless inning apiece.

Suppel hit another homer for Williamsburg. Zach Brown had three hits  for the Red Sox and Kolton Arnold contributed a two-run single.
