WATERLOO - The rain could not stop Linn-Mar senior Tyler McCann from winning a Mississippi Valley Conference golf title Monday in Waterloo.

It couldn't stop the Kennedy Cougars, either.

McCann grabbed medalist honors in the Mississippi Division by holding off the field on a wet day at the Irv Warren Course.

Kennedy captured the team championship by a whopping 35 strokes ahead of Linn-Mar.

The Mississippi Valley Conference bases its golf title on a series of three events. McCann fired a 67 in the first event and a 68 in the second outing, and his 4-over-par 40 Monday gave him a slim one-shot victory over Cody Bell and Mitchell Martin of Kennedy in the overall standings.

McCann finished his three rounds at 175, with Bell and Martin a stroke back at 176. Brigham Stewart of Kennedy finished at 178, giving the Cougars a 2-3-4 showing.

Martin had the best round Monday with a 2-under-par 34.

Most of the golfers played more than nine holes Monday, but tournament directors ruled that only the first nine holes would count to make it fair for everyone when heavy rains hit the course.

The Valley Division meet that was scheduled at Airport National in Cedar Rapids Monday was rained out and rescheduled for Tuesday morning.
