Prairie wins Consolation Bowl with Jefferson

Mike Morrissey got drenched with a bucket of water in honor of his first victory at Cedar Rapids Prairie Friday night.

It happened in the final seconds of a 29-17 triumph over Cedar Rapids Jefferson on homecoming at John Wall Field.

"That was a lot of fun," Morrissey said after the impromptu bath, which took him by surprise.

The celebration was dampened, however, by the sight of Prairie quarterback Jace Hanna being loaded into an ambulance and taken to Mercy Hospital with an apparent back injury in the fourth quarter.

"It would be nice to have him here celebrating with us. He's earned it," Morrissey said. "He's been a tough, tough kid all season long, with some of the beatings he's taken at times.

"He's a great young man and we'll make sure we get to see him here tonight."

Hanna completed 12 of 22 passes for 214 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Jared Edmonds before he was injured on a pass play with six minutes left in the game. Hanna's final pass was picked off, and when the play ended he was lying on the ground in pain.

Hanna received medical attention as his teammates kneeled on the field in concern. He got to his feet after 10 minutes and was helped to the sideline.

They carefully removed his helmet and shoulder pads, then covered him with towels and a blanket until the ambulance arrived. "We're definitely going to be in contact after the game to see if he's OK," said Brayton Carlson, who had a big game for the Hawks.

Jefferson (0-4, 0-7) lost its 20th straight game since 2009 and also lost receiver/defensive back Alex Baxter, who apparently suffered another MCL injury to his left knee early in the contest. Baxter hurt that same knee during the summer, but recovered quickly and began the season at quarterback.

Both clubs entered the Consolation Bowl with 0-and-6 records, but Prairie (1-4, 1-6) dented the victory column with a balanced attack that produced 226 yards through the air and 185 on the ground.

Jefferson had only three yards of total offense in the first half and trailed 16-0 at intermission, then showed signs of life in the second half behind sophomore quarterback Layne Sullivan. Sullivan hit 11 of 22 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, but also was intercepted three times.

The J-Hawks pulled within 16-9 in the third quarter, but Prairie answered with a touchdown pass from Hanna to Edmonds, this one covering 54 yards to make it 22-9.

Jefferson drove to the Prairie 20-yard line on its next possession, but Sullivan threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted by Carlson at the 15.

"That's a sophomore quarterback. He made a bad decision," Coach Jim Womochil said. "But he's a good athlete, and he's going to get better."

Prairie scored a few plays later on a 69-yard run by Carlson, making it 29-9 with 9:26 left in the game. Jefferson scored a consolation touchdown with four seconds remaining on a 2-yard pass from Sullivan to Taylor Birkicht.

Carlson starred on offense and defense for Prairie. He intercepted two passes, caught four passes and broke loose for the decisive 69-yard TD on a run from scrimmage.

Prairie grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Hanna to Edmonds. Austin Reutzel kicked three field goals for the Hawks in the first half for their 16-0 cushion at intermission.

Jefferson collected a safety in the third quarter when the J-Hawks tackled Prairie's Cam Rathje in the end zone. Christian Knox returned the ensuing Prairie kickoff to the Prairie 35-yard line and Sullivan found Aaron Gruwell for a 20-yard TD pass to make it 16-9.

"I thought their energy in the second half was much better than ours. And it showed," Morrissey said.

The J-Hawks gave the Prairie Hawks a scare, but Womochil said his club didn't have the experience or the confidence to collect the victory.

The Consolation Bowl went to Prairie, and Morrissey had the soaked shirt to prove it. He also was given the game ball in recognition of his first win in town.

"You guys earned this one. Thanks very much," he told his players. "I love every one of you."
