Metro athletes earn MVC honors

Josh Oglesby of Washington, Trey Blaha of Prairie and Stacey Schwarzenstein of Linn-Mar have been named Mississippi Valley Conference Athletes of the Week for Dec. 13-18, the league announced Monday.

Oglesby, a senior, helped the Washington boys basketball team beat Dubuque Wahlert and Jefferson. He averaged 20.5 points in those two games and is averaging 19.0 for the season, second-best in the conference.

Blaha, a freshman 103-pounder for the Prairie wrestling team, went 5-0 in Valley matches. He has a 16-0 record for the season, tied for the best overall mark in the MVC. Blaha helped Prairie win its own tournament and had first-period pins against Xavier and Iowa City High.

Schwarzenstein, a junior for the Linn-Mar girls bowling team, had a big day in a victory over Waterloo East. She rolled a 245 game, the seventh-best in the conference this season, and had a 410 series, raising her average to 177.9.

Waterloo West senior Jadyn Spencer was named the women's basketball Player of the Week, Dubuque Hempstead senior Andrew Lugrain was saluted in men's bowling, and Iowa City High senior Cam Herting was recognized in men's swimming.
