Controversial call keys Xavier past Kennedy

PDF

Isaac Frisch's goal in the seventh minute of overtime lifted Xavier past Kennedy, 2-1, Friday afternoon in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game at Kennedy.

The game was the resumption of a contest from May 3 that was suspended by lightning in the ninth minute of the first half. Kennedy held a 1-0 lead on a goal by Grant Sheeley at the time of the suspension.

A controversial foul with seven minutes left in regulation gave Xavier a penalty kick that Logan Buschette converted to tie the game, 1-1.

Xavier sprung a counterattack in overtime. Chad Gilmer's shot on goal was stopped, but Frisch was there to bang home the rebound.

Xavier, ranked sixth in Class 2A, improved to 5-8-1 overall and 5-7 in the MVC.

Kennedy fell to 7-7, 6-6. The Cougars, ranked No. 14 in Class 3A, play their third game in as many days Saturday when they travel to North Scott.
