J-Hawks strike early, top Warriors

Cedar Rapids Jefferson scored five runs in the second inning and coasted to its second win in two nights over Cedar Rapids Washington, 5-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball game at Washington on Friday night.

The J-Hawks beat the Warriors on Thursday night, 5-4.

A leadoff single by Austin Goodell followed by bunt singles by Chance Tiedtke and Sam Techau loaded the bases in the first inning for Jefferson. Colten Jourdan doubled down the left-field line, driving in two runs.

That was followed by a suicide squeeze and three Washington errors, giving the J-Hawks their quick 5-0 margin.

“I got a pitch right down the middle and just went with it,” said Jourdan. “I was looking for a fastball and when I got it, I didn’t waste any time.”

Jordan Dee went the distance for Jefferson, giving up four hits while striking out seven.

“I was having trouble with my curveball early, but in the third it began working for me so I was able to keep them off balance the rest of the game,” said Dee. “It felt good to get the complete game win.”

Jourdan is Jefferson's catcher and had a good book on the Warriors. “I kind of knew what those guys could hit from last night, so once Jordan got his rhythm we were able to work through their lineup,” he remarked.

Tiedtke collected three singles to lead the J-Hawks' eight-hit attack. Jourdan’s double was their only extra base hit.

“We’re not a home-run hitting team and they didn’t handle the bunts in the second, so we took advantage of it,” said Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba. “That bases loaded double was a big play for us.”

“That second inning is kind of where we are at right now,” said Washington Coach Tony Lombardi. “We are a young team and the execution will improve.”

A.J  Puk’s line drive leadoff double over center fielder Christian Knox was the only extra-base hit for Washington. Eighth grader Isaiah Nimmers picked up his first varsity hit in the seventh, but the Warriors left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

“I was a little disappointed that they didn’t pitch to me in the seventh inning,” said Puk. "But with first base empty, I kind of expected it.”

Washington (2-5, 0-4) travels to Ottumwa on Saturday.  Jefferson (3-7, 2-2) travels to City High for a conference doubleheader on Monday.
