Taylor Sohn pitched eight shutout innings for the Kennedy softball team Thursday night against second-ranked Iowa City West, but unfortunately for the Cougars it wasn't good enough.

Mackenzie Laux pitched nine shutout innings for Iowa City West and the Women of Troy edged the Cougars in a Mississippi Valley Conference thriller, 1-0, at Kennedy.

Michaela Recker of West lined a two-out triple in the top of the ninth to score Lauren Larson from first base with the game's only run. Laux allowed only four hits and struck out 17 batters.

Sohn allowed five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Kennedy (7-16, 4-12) stranded 10 baserunners in the loss.

Iowa City West (23-1, 15-1) collected 18 hits in the nightcap and belted the Cougars, 18-5. Amanda Gaffey hit a two-run homer for Kennedy and Maddie Flesner went 2-for-3.
