Two No. 2s too many for Prairie girls

PDF

One night after losing to the No. 2 team in Class 4A, Prairie got a chance to see how it stood up against the No. 2 team in Class 3A.

The Hawks didn't fare any better.

Amanda Platte scored 18 points to lead Class 3A No. 2 Mount Vernon to a 43-22 victory Saturday night in a nonconference girls basketball game at Prairie.

Mount Vernon (17-1) played without its leading scorer, 6-foot-2 senior Taylor Dicus. Even without Dicus, Mount Vernon's height and defense was too much for Prairie to overcome.

“She (Dicus) has been out since Thursday with an ankle she rolled playing club volleyball,” Mustangs Coach Bob Kintzel said. “We went with a smaller lineup, the guards played well.”

Prairie and Mount Vernon both came out in man to man defenses. The Mustangs' defense was just a little bit better, holding the Hawks without a basket for the first 5:30. Mount Vernon shot out to a 9-0 lead and held an 11-3 lead after the first quarter. The Mustangs led 20-12 at halftime and 34-18 after three quarters.

“We knew we had the height advantage inside and that they had good shooters,” Kintzel said. “We wanted to take their perimeter game away.”

The Mustangs were very patient on offense and took a lot of time off the clock. The Mustang defense continued to baffle the Hawks offense holding them to only four points in the fourth quarter.

Junior Liz Skotowski added 10 points for Mount Vernon. Junior Alyssa Weiland led Prairie (4-13) with seven points. Prairie's leading scorer, freshman Madison Dellamuth (11.4 ppg), did not score and took only two shots.

Prairie's next game is Friday at home against No. 10 Iowa City High.
