Marion's Fisher opts for Upper Iowa

Marion High School senior Tyler Fisher has accepted an offer to play football at Upper Iowa University next season.

Fisher played quarterback and linebacker for the Indians last fall, but he prefers defense and was recruited as a linebacker.

"I've always liked defense," he said. "I'm kind of that type of guy."

Fisher, 6-foot-2, weighs 205 pounds, but he'd like to reach 225 by the time he joins the Peacocks.

Fisher made 96 tackles in 10 games for Marion last season. He also passed for 883 yards and rushed for 232 yards for the Indians, who finished 7-3 and made the Class 3A playoffs.

Fisher said he plans to major in biology and likes Upper Iowa's "two-classes-at-a-time" system that lets students take two classes during an eight-week session.

"It gives you a lot more time to get other things done, like football," he said. "It's a lot easier, I think."

Fisher is currently playing basketball at Marion, averaging 5.7 points and 5.4 rebounds. He broke his nose earlier this season and wears a protective mask.

Fisher visited Winona State and Truman State before deciding to enroll at Upper Iowa. He also considered Iowa Conference schools.

"I feel really good," he said. "It feels nice to get all the stress off your chest and look forward to the upcoming fall."
