Smith will sign with Saint Ambrose

Marion senior Bre Smith will sign a letter of intent to continue her bowling career at Saint Ambrose University in Davenport.

Smith finished second in the Class 2A state bowling meet this year, leading Marion to a third-place team finish. She finished fourth as a sophomore and ninth as a junior.

She will sign her letter on Thursday at 3:05 p.m. in the school district board room.

Smith leads Marion to 3rd at state

DES MOINES – Bre Smith turned in a big performance Tuesday to help the Marion Indians finish third at the Class 2A state bowling tournament at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.

Smith rolled games of 247 and 235 to finish with a 482 series, good for second place in the individual standings. Leah Frost of Waterloo East had games of 290 and 210 for a 500 series.

Marion finished with a score of 2,777. Waterloo East won the tournament with 3,071 pins and Ottumwa was second with 2,863.

Jacob Fulton of Xavier finished in a tie for 18th place as an individual qualifier in the Class 2A boys tournament, shooting a 204 game and a 375 series.

Tanya Zaugg of Xavier finished 25th in the girls standings with games of 187 and 157 for a 344 series.

Marion - Girls Bowling

Blood, Sturtz top all-Metro bowling

Rylee Blood of Prairie and Hunter Sturtz of Jefferson have been honored as the Athletes of the Year on the all-Metro bowling teams, as selected by the Metro coaches.

Prairie girls claimed three of seven spots on the all-Metro first team with Blood, Ashley Sundstrom and Sabrina Keiper. Shania Christensen of Washington, Bre Smith of Marion, Mekena Diercks of Linn-Mar and Jamie Milota of Kennedy also made the first team.

Alex Diercks of Linn-Mar, James Jambois of Kennedy, Matt Galloro of Prairie, Jarrett Steward of Marion, Jacob Fulton of Xavier and Charlie Hart of Xavier joined Sturtz on the all-Metro first team for boys.

Don Willfong of Prairie was named the girls Coach of the Year and Mat Fowler of Jefferson was named the boys Coach of the Year.

Second Team Girls

Kaitlyn Earley (Prairie), Alexis Tschantz (Linn-Mar), Jade Klinefelter (Prairie), Alexis Smith (Marion), Megan Kitzmiller (Jefferson), Tanya Zaugg (Xavier).

Marion - Girls Bowling

Marion girls, Zaugg star at 2A bowling

Bre Smith of Marion won the individual title and the Indians captured the team championship and earned a state tournament berth with 2,600 pins in a Class 2A district meet Tuesday at May City Bowl.

Tanya Zaugg finished second behind Smith and earned an at-large individual trip to state.

Smith rolled a 264 game and a 497 series for the Indians.

Zaugg had a 267 game and a 489 series for the Saints.

Marion - Girls Bowling

Smith enjoys 408 series for Marion

Bre Smith had the hot hand for the Marion Indians Monday with a 408 series in a Wamac Conference meet against Western Dubuque at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

The undefeated Bobcats won the meet, 2765-2565, raising their record to 11-0.

Smith rolled games of 183 and 225 for the Indians (5-5). Brooke Kluesner of Western Dubuque nipped Smith for top honors with a 410 series.

WESTERN DUBUQUE: Brooke Kluesner 191+219=410, Amber Huberty 234+141=375, Kayla Horsfield 193+181=374, Mariah Kluesner 178+172=350, Lisa Schroeder 165+183=348, Madison Theisen 167+175=342.

MARION: Alyssa Rose 148+146=294, Madison Baker 149+187=336, Alexis Smith 160+182=342, Aleann Romo 150+187=337, Alicia Steepleton 135+156=291, Bre Smith 183+225=408.

Western Dubuque: 1857 + 908 = 2765.
