Saints facing Spanish star at state soccer

DES MOINES – The Xavier Saints will be facing an incredibly talented soccer player from Spain on Friday when they meet Iowa Falls-Alden in the semifinals of the Class 2A state tournament in Des Moines.

Marcos Villa has scored 56 goals for Iowa Falls-Alden in 20 games this season and tied a national record when he scored a hat trick in nine straight games.

Iowa Falls-Alden features another scoring machine with Logan Steelman, who's produced 32 goals for the Cadets this year.

Xavier topped the Marion Indians, 5-1, in the opening round of the state tournament at the Cownie Soccer Complex Thursday afternoon. Thomas Bean and Will Hanigan scored for the Saints in the first half to give them a 2-1 lead at intermission, then Shane Scott, Luke Duball and Brian Lang produced goals in the second half.

Jaffer Murphy scored a goal for Marion, which was making its first trip to the state tournament in school history and finished with an 11-5 record.

Marion - Boys Soccer

Marion boots Maquoketa in substate

The Marion Indians blanked Maquoketa, 3-0, in the opening round of the boys Class 2A substate soccer tournament Tuesday at Marion.

Alex Whalen and Tyler Lumbard scored goals for the Indians. Noah Smith collected an assist. The third tally was an "own" goal by Maquoketa.

Marion will play at Solon in the substate semifinals Thursday.

Smith helps Marion top Maquoketa

Noah Smith scored two goals Tuesday as the Marion Indians defeated Maquoketa, 4-1, in a Wamac Conference soccer match at Marion.

Alex Whalen and Justin Thompson also tallied for Marion.

Noah Walter collected two assists. Carter Stigge and Ryan Whalen also had assists.

DEWITT - The Marion High School boys soccer team was edged by DeWitt Central, 3-2, in a Wamac Conference match in DeWitt Friday.

Enoch Duval scored both goals for the Indians on assists from Ryan Whalen.

Marion boys notch 5th shutout in row

CENTER POINT - Noah Smith fired in two goals Tuesday as the Marion boys soccer team blanked Center Point-Urbana, 3-0, in a Wamac Conference match for its fifth straight shutout.

Noah Walter also scored for the Indians with an assist from Enoch Duval.
