Washington girls net 3rd place

IOWA CITY – The Washington girls were unable to defend their Class 2A state tennis title Saturday, but they did the next best thing.

Routed by eventual champ Des Moines Roosevelt in the morning semifinals, the Warriors bounced back to whitewash Urbandale 5-0 in the afternoon consolation match to claim third place.

No. 1 singles player Lilly Hartman was the only one taken to three sets in the afternoon session. After losing her first game 6-3, she rallied to win the second 6-2 and took the tiebreaker 10-6.

Straight-set victories were notched by Hannah Sherman (6-1, 6-1), Kelly King (6-3, 6-3), Jennifer Greif (6-2, 6-0) and Laura Gibson (6-0, 6-0). Eliza Sundermann did not need to finish her match once the Warriors clinched the meet.

Hartman, Sherman settle for 3rd place

IOWA CITY - After four years of playing in the top echelon of prep tennis, Washington senior Lilly Hartman knows the ups and downs of her sport.

Fortune can turn at the drop of a topspin.

When she and sophomore doubles partner Hannah Sherman forged a first-set 5-3 lead in their semifinal match of the Class 2A girls state championships Friday morning, they looked to be in complete control.

Besides her competitive spirit, Hartman’s strength is her rocket serve. But with the opening set on the line, a gritty duo from Urbandale broke Hartman’s serve to stay alive and won the next three games as well to pull out a 7-5 comeback victory.

Xavier twins, Jasper in state semifinals

Xavier's twin sister duo of Claire and Jeanne Bouchard, along with teammate Allison Jasper, advanced to the semifinals on Thursday in Class 1A state girls tennis tournament at Ankeny.

The Bouchards had a tough road to the semifinals. In the first round, they needed a first-set tiebreaker win before pulling away in the second set to win 7-6, 6-1 over Creston/Orient Macksburg's Caitlin McIlravy and Sydney Dunphy.

Three sets were needed for the twins to advance through the quarterfinals against Ryan Petievich and Hanna Schoning of Spirit Lake/Okoboji. The Bouchards prevailed, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

They will meet Red Oak's Micayla Taylor and Grace Blomstedt in a 10 a.m. semifinal match.

Jasper, the No. 3 seed, had a much easier time advancing to the semifinals. She lost just three games in wins over Osage's Amber Schwarting (6-0, 6-0) and Haley Schneiderman of Aplington-Parkersburg (6-1, 6-2).
