Xavier baseball team sweeps Waterloo East

The Xavier Saints made quick work of Waterloo East in their  Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Ken Charipar Field Friday.

The Saints swept the Trojans, 10-0 and 14-0, in a pair of lopsided  baseball games that were stopped after 4 1/2 innings due to the mercy  rule.

Xavier raised its records to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the league.  Waterloo East fell to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Bryce Schulte and Will Angstman had three hits for the Saints in the  first game. Ryan Hosch pitched the first three innings for the  victory, allowing two hits with five strikeouts.

Garrett Reis went 3-for-3 with two triples, a double and four RBIs in  the second game. Angstman had two more hits and three RBIs.

Schulte had two hits and pitched three innings for the victory in Game  2. He allowed one hit with five strikeouts.

Xavier baseball swept by Wahlert

DUBUQUE - The Xavier baseball team was swept by Dubuque Wahlert, 12-2  and 5-4, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Dubuque  Tuesday.

The first game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings by the mercy rule.

The Saints (1-5, 0-2) collected only six hits in the doubleheader.  They had two hits in the first game and four hits in the nightcap.

Bryce Schulte and Sam Meyers were the losing pitchers for Xavier.  Wahlert scored 17 runs in the twinbill, but only six of the runs were  earned.

Wahlert (5-1, 2-0) is ranked No.3 in Class 3A.

Xavier baseball team tops Jefferson

Sam Meyers pitched six strong innings Tuesday night as the Xavier  Saints topped Jefferson, 6-2, in a consolation game of the Vrbicek  Metro Tournament at Ken Charipar Field.

The Saints scored four runs in the seventh inning to snap a 2-2 tie  and secure the victory.

Meyers allowed two runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and two  walks. Jack Lemke had two hits for Xavier (1-1).

Chris Haring and Tyler Unkel had two hits for Jefferson (0-2).

Xavier advanced to face Kennedy for fifth place in the tournament on  Wednesday. Jefferson met Mount Vernon for seventh place.

Marion tops Saints in Metro tourney

Brady Donohue pitched six strong innings Monday night as the Marion  Indians topped Xavier, 5-1, in the first round of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at Ken Charipar Field.

Washington defeated Jefferson, 12-0, in six innings in the other first-round game at Xavier.

Xavier and Jefferson will meet in a consolation game at Xavier Tuesday at 5 p.m., followed by the winners bracket semifinal game between Marion and Washington at 7 p.m.

Linn-Mar trimmed Mount Vernon, 4-3, in eight innings and Prairie defeated Kennedy, 6-2, in the first-round games at Prairie on Monday. Kennedy and Mount Vernon meet in a losers bracket game at 5 p.m. at Prairie Tuesday, then Prairie will face Linn-Mar in the winners bracket semifinal at 7 p.m.

The final round is Wednesday with the championship and consolation games to be played at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The fifth and seventh-place games are slated for Xavier.

Xavier is host site for Metro tourney

Xavier is one of two host sites for the 48th annual Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament, which kicks off the high school baseball season for the  Saints, the other six schools in the Cedar Rapids Metro and Mount Vernon.

Xavier Coach Bob Cataldo's team, which finished last season at  12-23-1, will host Marion at 7 p.m. on Monday, following the 5 p.m.  contest between Jefferson and Washington at Ken Charipar Field.

Prairie is the other host site. Coach Todd Rima's Hawks, the defending Class 4A state champions, face a tough opener against traditional power Kennedy at 7 p.m. following a 4:30 p.m. contest between Mount Vernon and Linn-Mar.

Semifinal and consolation round games are set for Tuesday. The championship and third-place games will be Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium with the fifth and seventh-place games to be played at Xavier.
