Xavier boys net 1A state title

WEST DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints captured the first boys state tennis title in school history Tuesday with an impressive performance at the Class 1A championships in West Des Moines.

The Saints whipped Pella, 5-2, in the semifinals and blanked LeMars, 5-0, in the championship round.

Jon Lansing, Alex Hinrichs and Charlie Esker won both of their singles matches for Xavier. Blake Magill won his singles match in the semifinals against Pella, while Calvin Ford and Ryan Jasper took their singles matches in the finals against LeMars.

Lansing and Esker, who won the Class 1A state doubles title in Waterloo on Saturday, won their doubles match in the semifinals  against Pella for the fifth and deciding point in that meet.

Lansing, Esker win state tennis title

WATERLOO - Jon Lansing and Charlie Esker of Xavier enjoyed a remarkable run at the Class 1A state tennis tournament Saturday and captured the first doubles title in school history.

Lansing and Esker topped Luke Willis and Ryan Willis, 6-4, 6-2, in the championship at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.

Lansing, a junior, and Esker, a senior, were the No. 1 seed in the state tournament and the Willis twins were the No. 2 seed.

Lansing and Esker went 4-0 at the state tournament and did not a set. They won 6-2, 6-0 in the first round, 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0 again in the semifinals and 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.

"It was pretty awesome," said Xavier Coach Jim Potts. "They're playing their best tennis right now. It's a good time to do it."

Lansing and Esker raised their record to 16-5 for the season.

Potts said the players communicate very well on the court.

"Jon's strength would be his control. He's always in control," the coach said. "And he's phenomenal at the net. A great net player.

"Charlie serves well. He's also very good at the net. Quick hands."

Alex Hinrichs and Ryan Jasper of Xavier also had a good weekend at the state tournament as Xavier's No. 2 doubles team. They won three of five matches and placed seventh out of 16 teams.

Xavier - Boys Tennis

Lansing, Esker reach tennis semifinals

WATERLOO - Jon Lansing and Charlie Esker of Xavier won both of their  doubles matches Friday at the Class 1A state tennis tournament Friday  at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.

Lansing and Esker, who are the No. 1 seeds in the doubles competition,  whipped a team from Ballard, 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round. The Saints  then topped their opponents from Spencer by the identical score of  6-2, 6-0.

Lansing and Esker will face the No. 4 seeds from Glenwood in the  semifinals Saturday morning. The final round is scheduled for Saturday  afternoon.

Alex Hinrichs and Ryan Jasper of Xavier lost in the first round of the  doubles competition to the No. 2 seeds from Waverly-Shell Rock, 6-2,  6-3.

Hinrichs and Jasper rebounded with two victories in the consolation  bracket and are still alive for fifth place at the state tournament.  They beat a team from Creston, 6-4, 6-2, and topped a team from  Maharishi in a tiebreaker.

Xavier boys tennis makes state semifinals

WATERLOO - The Xavier Saints won both of their matches in Waterloo  Monday and advanced to the semifinals of the Class 1A state tennis  tournament.

The Saints blanked Waterloo Columbus, 5-0, and trimmed Dubuque  Wahlert, 5-4, to reach the final four of the state meet.

The Class 1A state tournament will be held at the Waveland Tennis  Courts in Des Moines May 30.

Jon Lansing won both of his matches at No. 1 singles Monday for  Xavier. Charlie Esker and Ryan Jasper also won twice.

Xavier and Wahlert split their six singles matches, 3-3. Esker and  Lansing won at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-4, and Alex Hinrichs and Jasper  prevailed at No. 2 doubles, 7-6, 6-1, to clinch the victory.

Xavier boys slam Hempstead in tennis

Jon Lansing topped Nathan Tauke, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles Tuesday as  the Xavier Saints slammed Hempstead, 8-1, in a Mississippi Valley  Conference tennis meet at Xavier.

Alex Hinrichs, Charlie Esker, Blake Magill and Ryan Jasper also won  their singles matches for the Saints.
