Kristie Sommer honored by IIAC

Linn-Mar grad Kristie Sommer has been named the Iowa Conference Female Athlete of the Week after averaging 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in two victories for the Wartburg College women's basketball team last week.

Sommer tied the IIAC record for 3-pointers in a single game with eight against Dubuque.

Sommer's twin sister, Katie, was named the Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week for Wartburg Dec. 7.

Kristie Sommer is averaging 10.2 points with 28 3-pointers. Katie Sommer is averaging 11.8 points with 19 3-pointers.

The Knights are 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Beyer tops All-Metro football team

Shaun Beyer of Kennedy has been named the Player of the Year on the 2015 All-Metro Football Team, as selected by the coaches.

Beyer helped Kennedy reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs with his outstanding performances on offense, defense and special teams. He was named first team All-Metro on offense and also was selected as the first-team punter.

Kennedy and Xavier had five first-team picks on the All-Metro team.

Tyler Dralle, Mason Jacobs, Dalles Jacobus, Austin Coates and Beyer made the team from the Kennedy. Nick Stark, Bryce Schulte, Maliki Wilson, Bryce Charipar and Sean Murphy made the top squad from Xavier.

Washington had four first-team selections with Isaiah Nimmers, Tavian Patrick, O'Rien Vance and Rane Weiland.

Kennedy tops all-district football team

Seven members of the Kennedy football squad have been named first-team selections on the Class 4A District 5 All-District team.

Tyler Dralle and Shaun Beyer of Kennedy were honored as the Co-OffensivePlayers of the Year. Kennedy Coach Brian White and his assistants were named the Coaching Staff of the Year. And Dalles Jacobus of Kennedy was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Year with Valentino Green of Jefferson.

Dralle, Beyer, Mason Jacobs and Nick Duehr of Kennedy were first-team picks on offense. Johnson Mator, Austin Coates and Jacobus were first-team picks on defense.

Jefferson landed five first-team berths with Jared Eivins and Manny Olutunde on offense, along with Tavian Rashed, Green and Jacob Beaton on defense.

Linn-Mar also had five first-team selections with Daniel Gorsich, Dallas McFarland and Reese Phillips on offense, along with Samuel Bries and Logan Hagmeier on defense.
