Erin Kuba signs with Utah State

Erin Kuba has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue her college softball career at Utah State.

Kuba, a Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad, hit .422 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs at Indian Hills Community College this season and was named the  Regional Player of the Year. She also excels on defense at third base.

Utah State is an NCAA Division I program that competes in the Mountain West Conference. The Aggies finished with an 18-34 record this season.

Kuba will be playing in the Iowa Women's Softball League again this summer in Cedar Rapids. She will have two years of eligibility at Utah State after spending two years at Indian Hills.

 

Xavier baseball team tops Jefferson

Sam Meyers pitched six strong innings Tuesday night as the Xavier  Saints topped Jefferson, 6-2, in a consolation game of the Vrbicek  Metro Tournament at Ken Charipar Field.

The Saints scored four runs in the seventh inning to snap a 2-2 tie  and secure the victory.

Meyers allowed two runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and two  walks. Jack Lemke had two hits for Xavier (1-1).

Chris Haring and Tyler Unkel had two hits for Jefferson (0-2).

Xavier advanced to face Kennedy for fifth place in the tournament on  Wednesday. Jefferson met Mount Vernon for seventh place.

 

Xavier is host site for Metro tourney

Xavier is one of two host sites for the 48th annual Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament, which kicks off the high school baseball season for the  Saints, the other six schools in the Cedar Rapids Metro and Mount Vernon.

Xavier Coach Bob Cataldo's team, which finished last season at  12-23-1, will host Marion at 7 p.m. on Monday, following the 5 p.m.  contest between Jefferson and Washington at Ken Charipar Field.

Prairie is the other host site. Coach Todd Rima's Hawks, the defending Class 4A state champions, face a tough opener against traditional power Kennedy at 7 p.m. following a 4:30 p.m. contest between Mount Vernon and Linn-Mar.

Semifinal and consolation round games are set for Tuesday. The championship and third-place games will be Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium with the fifth and seventh-place games to be played at Xavier.

Xavier boys net 8th win in tennis

The Xavier Saints won all the singles matches in straight sets  Wednesday and defeated Jefferson, 8-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys tennis meet at Jefferson.

Jon Lansing and Ryan Jasper swept their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0. The Saints raised their record to 8-4.

Xavier downs J-Hawks in girls tennis

The Xavier Saints swept the singles matches Wednesday and whipped  Jefferson, 8-1, in a girls tennis meet at Jefferson.

Nina Marquardt defeated Maddie Slagle, 10-6, at No. 1 singles.

The Saints raised their record to 4-9.

Duball, Bean help Saints boot Jeff

Luke Duball and Thomas Bean scored two goals Tuesday as the  fifth-ranked Xavier Saints kicked Jefferson, 7-3, in a Mississippi  Valley Conference match at Heco Field.

Duball collected three assists and Bean had two assists as the Saints  raised their record to 6-3.

Jefferson pulled within 3-2 in the second half, but Xavier responded  with four straight goals to secure the victory.

Maliki Wilson, Jon Jacobi and Ty Corrigan also scored for the Saints.  Matthew Been and Carter Ives had assists.

 

No. 11 Xavier girls rally by J-Hawks

The 11th-ranked Xavier girls soccer team rallied for a 3-2 victory  over the Jefferson J-Hawks Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference  match at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks took a 2-0 lead, but the Saints responded with goals by  Addy Hoffman, Paige Diebold and Peyton Sadilek for the victory.  Sadilek collected the game-winner with about two minutes left in the  second half.

Avery Campbell, Diebold and Elena Minor had assists for Xavier. Melody  Snow made five saves in goal for the Saints.

Xavier raised its record to 6-2. Jefferson fell to 2-7.

   

Kramer leads Xavier golfers at Airport

Libby Kramer shot a 17-over-par 49 to lead the Xavier girls golf team in a Mississippi Valley Conference triangular meet at Airport National Thursday.

Amanda Happel and Lexi Poundstone of Prairie shared medalist honors at 10-over 42.

Xavier boys roll by J-Hawk bowlers

Dale Weaver and Jacob Fulton sparked the Xavier Saints by the  Jefferson J-Hawks, 2833 to 2472, in a Mississippi Valley Conference  boys bowling meet at May City Lanes Friday.

Weaver rolled a 427 series and Fulton bowled a 227 game for the Saints.

The Xavier girls lost to Jefferson, 2667 to 2460. Megan Kitzmiller led  the J-Hawks with a 400 series. Ella Schrader topped Xavier at 334.

No. 11 Xavier girls trim J-Hawks

Kiana Stanek tied a school record with six 3-pointers Friday night to help the 11th-ranked Xavier Saints edge Jefferson, 50-47, in a  Mississippi Valley Conference game at Jefferson.

Stanek scored all 18 of her points on 3-pointers and Kylie Brown notched 17 points as the Saints raised their record to 5-3. Caitlynn Daniels collected seven assists.

Stanek made five 3-pointers in the first half and had 15 markers by  intermission. The Saints led 29-17 at halftime and had to hold off the J-Hawks in the fourth quarter.

Kennedy Dighton scored 18 points for the J-Hawks (4-4) and Erica Oler finished with 15.
