Appel nets 43 as Eagles trim Coe

Luke Appel poured in a career-high 43 points Tuesday night as the  12th-ranked Kirkwood Eagles rallied to defeat the Coe junior varsity, 95-89, at Johnson Hall.

Appel, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Marshalltown, shot 18 for 22 from the field and canned a pair of 3-pointers.

Coe led by nine points with about three minutes remaining, but the Eagles forced turnovers and surged to their 18th victory in 22 games.

DJ Purnell finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds for Kirkwood. Seybian Sims collected 10 rebounds, eight points, three assists and three steals.

Sean Oberman scored 19 points for Coe. The Kohawks made sixteen 3-pointers, with Zach Bushbaum nailing five triples.

Coe - Men's Basketball

3 Coe men named all-conference

Matt Vonderhaar, Marshall Shedeck and Jake Timm of Coe have named to the Iowa Conference all-star basketball team.

Vonderhaar was named to the first team, Shedeck made the second team and Timm received honorable mention.

Andre Norris of Dubuque was named the MVP. Robbie Sieverding of Dubuque was named the Coach of the Year.

Buena Vista out-shoots Coe men

Matt Vonderhaar scored 28 points, but Buena Vista out-gunned the Coe men’s basketball team 100-84 in an Iowa Conference game Saturday at Eby Fieldhouse.

The teams combined to make 28 3-point goals, with Vanderhaar scoring six to lead the way.

Nick Clark and Thomas Wisecup each made five 3-pointers for Buena Vista, and Clark finished with 33 points.

Marshall Shedeck had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Kohawks (9-16, 4-10 IIAC), and Matt Meyer also scored 12 points.

Buena Vista improved to 11-14 and 6-8.

Coe men spank Luther, 84-75

Matt Meyer, Marshall Shedeck and Matt Vonderhaar combined for 63 points Wednesday night as the Coe men's basketball team topped Luther, 84-75, in an Iowa Conference game at Eby Fieldhouse.

Coe raised its records to 10-14 overall and 5-8 in the conference.

Meyer popped in 22 points, Shedeck scored 21 and Vonderhaar added 20 for the Kohawks. Shedeck grabbed 16 rebounds for a big double-double. He also made five 3-pointers. Jake Timm collected seven assists.

Jack Woolems scored 16 points for Luther (5-19, 4-9).

Vonderhaar paces Coe by Simpson

INDIANOLA - Matt Vonderhaar tossed in 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday as Coe dunked Simpson, 87-66, in an Iowa Conference men's basketball game at the Cowles Fieldhouse in Indianola.

Marshall Shedeck collected 14 points and nine rebounds for the Kohawks (9-14, 4-8). Lincoln Vorba scored 13 points. Jake Timm stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Timm became the fourth player in school history with more than 400 career assists.

Coe shot 49.1 percent from the field and canned 22 of 25 free throws.
Simpson made only 31.1 percent of its shots from the field.

Sam Amsbaugh led Simpson with 16 points.
