Coe sending 3 wrestlers to NCAA meet

DUBUQUE - Three Coe College wrestlers earned spots Sunday in the NCAA Division III national tournament by virtue of their finishes at the NCAA Central Regional Championships.

Defending national champion Farai Sewera had a big day for the Kohawks at 165 pounds, capping his day with a 6-4 overtime decision over second-seeded Nicholas Michael of Wartburg, 6-4. Sewera (25-2) was named the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Returning All-American Ryan Harrington (25-3) earned a return trip to nationals at 174 after losing a 3-1 decision to top-ranked Eric DeVos of Wartburg in the finals on a takedown in the final seconds.

At 125, Jan Rosenberg (21-10) also earned a return trip to nationals by winning the third-place match with a 12-8 win over Jimmy Panozza of Augustana. Rosenberg will take a 21-10 record into the NCAA National Championships.

The Kohawks finished fourth in the 13 team field with 86 points. Wartburg won the team title with 160 points.

The national meet will be held March 11-12 at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Coe wrestlers trim Dubuque

DUBUQUE - Andrew Holladay collected a pin at 197 pounds Thursday night to help Coe defeat Dubuque, 22-16, in an Iowa Conference wrestling meet at Dubuque.

Farai Sewera, who is ranked No. 1 at 165 pounds for the Kohawks, posted an 18-1 technical fall. Ryan Harrington, who is ranked No. 2 at 174 pounds, won a 3-2 decision.

Jan Rosenberg (125) and Josh Donkle (149) had major decisions for the Kohawks.

Coe wrestlers nip Cornell, 23-22

MOUNT VERNON – The 15th-ranked Coe College wrestling team upset No. 11 Cornell College, 23-22, for the Kohawks’ 10th consecutive victory over the Rams on Thursday at Cornell.

Coe’s two top-ranked wrestlers each had technical falls. Farai Sewera scored a 16-1 win over Ben Hewson at 165 pounds and Ryan Harrington won 16-1 over Brian Cristion.

Jan Rosenberg had a pin at 125 for Coe.

Coe wrestlers blanked by No. 1 Wartburg

WAVERLY – The 15th-ranked Coe wrestling team was humbled by top-ranked Wartburg on Friday, falling to the Knights 33-0.

Wartburg’s third-ranked 174-pounder, Eric Devos, won a 3-2 decision over Coe’s top-ranked Ryan Harrington in the marquee match of the night.
