Mount Mercy women fall by 30

OSKALOOSA - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team lost to  18th-ranked William Penn, 71-41, Wednesday night in a Heart of America  Conference game in Oskaloosa.

Brianna Thomas scored 18 points for the Mustangs (5-23, 2-21).

Kate Ylitalo scored 14 points and former Kirkwood player Olivia Usher  had 12 points for William Penn (22-6, 18-5).

Mount Mercy spikes William Penn

OSKALOOSA - Ben Ruggles collected 43 assists Tuesday night as the Mount Mercy men's volleyball team defeated William Penn, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10, in a Heart of America Conference match in Oskaloosa.

The Mustangs raised their records to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference. William Penn fell to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in the league.

Julian Armendano had 19 kills and Nikola Stoimenov had 11. Ben Steffen finished with 10 kills and four blocks.

Irwin tosses 1-hitter for Mustangs

DAVENPORT - Madelyn Irwin pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts  Sunday as the Mount Mercy women's softball team blanked Lincoln  College, 8-0, at the Ambrose Dome in Davenport.

The Mustangs also blanked Stephens College, 21-0, Sunday behind a  six-hitter by Jayna Witzany.

Jade Sharp had two hits and two RBIs in the victory over Lincoln.  Morgan Braughton had two hits and Jess Heick scored two runs.

Mustang baseball gets first win

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Mount Mercy baseball team broke into the victory  column Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Park University in Arizona.

Lyle Fini collected a two-run double in the fifth inning to give the  Mustangs a 2-0 lead and the Mount Mercy pitchers made it hold up.

Tanner Lohaus pitched the first five innings, allowing one run on  three hits. Blake Willenborg tossed three scoreless innings in relief  and Skylar Freese notched two strikeouts in the ninth inning for the  save as the Mustangs raised their record to 1-6. The three pitchers  allowed only five hits.

Mustangs top Peru State for clutch win

The Mount Mercy Mustangs won a crucial game for their absent head  coach Saturday. Of more importance, they won a crucial game for  themselves.

The Mustangs, scrambling for a spot in the Heart of America Conference  playoffs, bumped off Peru State, 89-85, Saturday with their backs  against the wall.

Coach Aaron Jennings and starting guard Streeter McIlravy missed the  game with the flu and Dennis McKinney, their leading scorer, got hit  in the head in the second half and did not return to the game as a  precautionary measure against a possible concussion.

The Mustangs found a way to win anyway against one of the top teams in  the league.

"I'm just really proud of the guys," said assistant coach Martez  Creighton, who subbed for Jennings. "They worked hard the last couple  of days in practice.
