Mount Mercy - Men's Cross Country

Mustangs run 21st at NAIA nationals

VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Mount Mercy women's cross country team placed  21st at the NAIA national meet Friday for the best finish in school  history.

The Mustangs' best previous showing was 24th, accomplished in 2001 and 2018.

Vanessa Cortes finished 72nd in the 5K race in 19 minutes, 11.1  seconds to pace Mount Mercy. Emily Erickson was 87th and Andrea Ertz  was 90th for the Mustangs.

Hannah Stoffel of Huntington won the women's race in 17:18.4 out of  341 runners. Madonna won the team championship.

Cortes leads Mustangs to Heart title

FAYETTE, Mo. - Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy raced to victory in the  Heart of America Conference cross country meet Saturday and led the  Mustangs to the team championship.

Cortes covered the 5K course in 19 minutes, 25.4 seconds for a  convincing 18-second victory over Isabella Guerra of Benedictine.

Emily Erickson of Mount Mercy placed fifth, Andrea Ertz finished sixth  and Kelsi Huhndorf was eighth as the Mustangs had four runners finish  in the top-8. Jessica Ertz finished 29th for Mount Mercy to round out  the team scoring.

Mount Mercy finished with 49 points to edge Baker (54) and Benedictine  (56) for the title. The Mustangs earned an automatic berth to the NAIA  national meet Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Wash.

Cortes claims NAIA Seminole Valley Stampede

There were 188 women in the NAIA Seminole Valley Stampede at Seminole  Valley Park in Cedar Rapids Saturday, but none of them could catch  Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy.

Cortes, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., blazed to victory in the 5K  race in 18 minutes, 41.5 seconds, topping Olivia Couch of Dordt by 7.3  seconds.

Mount Mercy finished a robust second out of 20 teams in the women's  race behind Dordt. Kelsi Huhndorf placed 12th for the Mustangs, Andrea  Ertz 16th, Emily Erickson 19th and McKenna Johnson 50th.

This was the second major championship in a row for Cortes. She also  captured first place in the Fighting Bee Invitational Oct. 12.

The Mount Mercy men's cross country team finished seventh out of 20  teams in their race. Jacob Blackmon led the Mustangs in 28th place in  the 8K stampede in 26 minutes, 19.0 seconds.

St. Mary (Kan.) won the men's title. Paul Becker of St. Mary won the  race in 24:54.3.

Mount Mercy - Men's Cross Country

Cortes races to title at Fighting Bee invite

BETTENDORF - Mount Mercy senior Vanessa Cortes claimed top honors at  the Fighting Bee Invitational cross country race Saturday in Bettendorf.

Cortes covered the 5,000 meter layout in 19 minutes, 5 seconds for a  19.5-second victory in a field of 84 contestants.

The Mount Mercy women's cross country team finished second out of  eight teams. Emily Erickson placed sixth in 20:03.5.

Jacob Blackmon of Mount Mercy placed third in the men's race in 26  minutes, 42.2 seconds for 8,000 meters out of 73 runners. Cameron  Steffens of Mount Mercy finished fifth and Aaron Golding was ninth to  help the Mustangs place second out of six teams in a tight race,  finishing just two points behind Trinity Christian.

Cortes runs 4th at Lakefront Invite

CHICAGO - Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy finished fourth out of 281  runners at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday.

Souleya Ibrahim of Oakton Community College won the 5K race in 18  minutes, 43.03 seconds. Cortes was clocked in 19:02.90.

Mount Mercy finished 10th out of 31 teams in a strong field.

The Mount Mercy men's cross country team placed 12th out of 31 teams.  Jacob Blackmon led the Mustangs in 27th place in 26 minutes, 50.39  seconds for the 8K event. Cole Martin of DePauw won the race in  25:57.85.
