Cook wins 2 events at MVC indoor

CEDAR FALLS - Famiek Cook of Cedar Rapids Kennedy captured the 200 meter dash and long jump at the Mississippi Valley Conference indoor track meet at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Monday.

Cook took the 200 in 23.21 seconds and claimed the long jump at 21 feet, 3 inches.

Shawn Beyer of Kennedy won the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches. The Cougars also claimed the shuttle hurdle relay (34.36 seconds) and captured the 4x400 relay (3:36.13).

Evans, Jones, Jacobus top all-Metro track

Josh Evans of Linn-Mar, Timauntay Jones of Jefferson and Derek Jacobus of Kennedy are three of the featured athletes on the 2013 All-Metro Boys Track Team.

Evans, Jones and Jacobus won titles at the state track meet this month. Evans claimed the 3200 meter run, Jones took the 800 meter run and Jacobus captured the long jump.

The Linn-Mar Lions won the Class 4A team championship at the state meet. The Lions also won the 4x200 relay and 1600 medley at state.

Jones, Jenks make golden runs at state

DES MOINES - Timauntay Jones and Stephanie Jenks turned in special performances at the state track meet Saturday.

Jones gave Cedar Rapids Jefferson its first gold medal in 30 years when he captured the Class 4A 800 meter run in a personal best 1 minute, 52.75 seconds.

Jenks, the precocious ninth grader from Linn-Mar, finished one of the most successful years for a freshman in state history when she added the 1500 meter title to her growing list of  accomplishments.

Metro athletes finished with eight gold medals at the state meet along with a long list of silver and bronze medals.

Jefferson - Boys Track

Jones smashes 800 records for J-Hawks

DUBUQUE - Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Timauntay Jones shattered a pair of ancient records in the 800-meter run Monday when he was timed in 1 minute, 53.36 seconds at the MVC Mississippi Division meet in Dubuque.

Jones broke the Jefferson school record of 1:55.4 that was set by Ralf Trimble in 1959. He also broke the Mississippi Valley Conference mark of 1:53.6 that was established by Mark Steffen of Davenport West in 1968.

Jones, who has signed to run at the University of Northern Iowa, was named the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year for his exploits.

Jones, Vanous win at Tri-State Invy

DUBUQUE - The Cedar Rapids Prairie boys track team won four events and captured top honors at the Harold Sweet Tri-State Invitational in Dubuque Thursday.

The Hawks trimmed Dubuque Senior, 108 to 104.5, for first place in the seven-team field.

Haakon Wilz won the 110 hurdles for Prairie. The Hawks also claimed the 4x200 relay, 4x800 relay and shuttle hurdle relay.

John Koelling captured the 200 and 400 meter dashes to help the Kennedy Cougars finish in third place in the team standings. Willie Rhoads won the high jump for the Cougars.

The Jefferson J-Hawks won three events at the meet. Timauntay Jones took the 1600, Lucas Vanous won the 400 hurdles and Jefferson won the 4x400 relay.
