Gaffey stars on senior night for Cougars

Amanda Gaffey did not play softball at Cedar Rapids Kennedy for the glory or the headlines, because there hasn't been much of that during her five years as the starting third baseman.

She did it for love.

"I just have a passion for the sport and I love my teammates and I wouldn't want to let them down, so I just kept playing," she said Thursday night.

Gaffey has endured five straight losing campaigns with the Cougars, but she was all smiles Thursday after Kennedy swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Cedar Falls on Senior Night at Kennedy, 5-3 and 14-11.

Gaffey went 0-for-2 with a walk in the first game, giving no indication of what was about to happen in the nightcap.

She went 3-for-4 in the second game with a two-run homer in the third inning, a two-run double in the fourth inning and a three-run homer in the fifth. That gave her a double, two homers and seven RBIs in three consecutive at-bats in three consecutive innings.

"I just had my head on the ball," she said. "The first game I was really nervous, but the second game I just settled down and was patient waiting for a good pitch."

Gaffey, Allie McQuiston and Capria Davis were honored on Senior Night between games of the doubleheader. That partly explains why Gaffey was nervous, but not entirely.

"I'm always nervous when I come up to bat," she said.

The sweep lifted the Cougars to 12-23 overall and 7-17 in the conference.

Gaffey has never experienced a winning season during her five years with the varsity, but she's glad she stuck with it.

"It was frustrating at times, but now when we work together like we did tonight we can pull it off," she said. "We're just one big family and I know we can do it, even though we've been struggling."

McQuiston contributed an RBI double in the second game for Kennedy and played well in right field. She made several good catches and also gunned down a runner at first base on what appeared to be a single to right.

"It feels good. It's our first sweep," McQuiston said.

Gaffey and McQuiston are both headed to Mount Mercy University later this summer and will be roommates. Gaffey will join the softball program, while McQuiston plans to be a two-sport athlete in volleyball and bowling.

Gaffey plans to study criminal justice and McQuiston wants to be a nurse. "I want to be a police offer," Gaffey said. "I just made up my mind in the last year."

Kennedy Coach Katie Bova appreciates what Gaffey and McQuiston have meant to the program. Bova became the head coach in 2008, the same year both players joined the team as eighth graders (Davis joined the program this year).

"I think it takes a certain type of person to give up their summer and play in the heat like they do," Bova remarked. "Their dedication means a lot. I think it showed a lot of character.

"They could easily walk away. But I think when you really love the game and love what you do, I think you stick it out."

Tylor Sohn pitched a complete game for the Cougars in the opener. Kennedy snapped a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs. Gaffey walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. Tanner Rathjens singled and scored on an RBI single by Erin Coker.

Cedar Falls (10-22, 6-18) jumped to a 7-1 lead in the top of the third inning in the nightcap, but that was before Gaffey took charge with her two-run homer, two-run double and three-run double to send the Cougars ahead.

Peyton Baskerville went 3-for-5 in the second game for Kennedy with two runs and two RBIs. Coker was 3-for-4 and Maddie Flesner scored three runs.

Freshman Madeline Crist pitched a complete game for the Cougars in the nightcap. She was touched for 11 runs, 19 hits and three home runs, but she hung in there and got the victory when her teammates scored 14 runs on 14 hits.

Drahozal hits timely homer for Saints

Xavier slugger Erin Drahozal picked the right game to come out of her batting slump Tuesday night.

Pitching the nightcap of a home twinbill against Kennedy, the power-packed freshman was nursing a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Leading off the Saints’ half of the inning, she promptly blasted a solo rocket high off the scoreboard beyond left-center for her first home run of the year.

Xavier scored two more runs in the fourth to add to the cushion, winning 6-3 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Cougars.

Behind a solid performance by mound ace Jacey Wiebold, the Saints won the opener 8-2.

Xavier squared its season marks at 10-10 overall and 9-9 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Kennedy fell to 7-18 overall and 4-14 in the MVC.

In her second year as a starter, Drahozal was hitting at a .350 clip in the No. 3 spot for the first half of the season before hitting the skids. Dropped down to the fifth spot in the order four games ago, she said the doldrums continued until she broke through with the towering solo shot high over the fence.

“Going 1-for-3 felt good,” she said of her showing in the second game after going hitless in the first. “I’ve had better games but, hey, some players make millions hitting .333.”

On the hill, she was coasting along for the first three innings until giving up a double to Heather McKinnon followed by a two-out, two-run homer to Amanda Gaffey.

Kennedy scored again in the fifth inning when pinch runner Sydney Green came home on a wild pitch.

As they’d done in the opener, the Saints came out of the chute with a fury. They jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning, starting with back-to-back singles from Sydney Galligan and Jamie Feltes and a walk to Jenna Schulte to load the bases.

Drahozal brought in the first run herself with a sacrifice fly to center, and Hayley Deutmeyer brought home two more with a sharp single.

The Saints’ final two runs in the fourth inning were knocked in by Morgan Breitbach and Courtney Colston.

Drahozal scattered five hits but said her defense saved her from a few scrapes. “Both Hayley (Deutmeyer) and Allison (Schwach) dove for balls that really helped me out,” she said.

In the first game, Xavier took an 8-0 lead before Kennedy managed a pair of runs in the fifth inning.

Lead-off hitter Schwach opened with a single in the first and Galligan bunted her way on base. Feltes sacrificed the first run in, and the second came in when a Drahozal pop-up was misplayed.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the second, but Wiebold was able to pitch out of the jam unscathed. For the game, Kennedy left 11 runners stranded.

“We needed to be more aggressive and put the ball in play more,” said Cougar Coach Katie Bova. “We struggled at the plate all night. We couldn’t get the bat on the ball."

Their two runs were scored in the fifth on a double by Peyton Baskerville and a single by Gaffey. It was too little too late, however.

The Saints tallied three runs in the second when Galligan drove in two with a triple and Feltes followed with a double. Following consecutive bunt hits
by Schwach and Galligan in the fourth, Feltes singled them home and Schulte singled her in.

Xavier interim head coach Nikki Price, subbing again for the recuperating Brian Erbe, was pleased with the back-to-back victories.

“Everything meshed tonight,” she said. “We got good pitching in both games. Defensively, we made some very good plays besides handling the routine ones.

“And we really attacked at the plate. We put runners on and then applied pressure on the bases.

“Everybody contributed, too. They were good wins for us. We just put everything together.”

Cougars drop 9-inning thriller to IC West

Taylor Sohn pitched eight shutout innings for the Kennedy softball team Thursday night against second-ranked Iowa City West, but unfortunately for the Cougars it wasn't good enough.

Mackenzie Laux pitched nine shutout innings for Iowa City West and the Women of Troy edged the Cougars in a Mississippi Valley Conference thriller, 1-0, at Kennedy.

Michaela Recker of West lined a two-out triple in the top of the ninth to score Lauren Larson from first base with the game's only run. Laux allowed only four hits and struck out 17 batters.

Sohn allowed five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Kennedy (7-16, 4-12) stranded 10 baserunners in the loss.

Iowa City West (23-1, 15-1) collected 18 hits in the nightcap and belted the Cougars, 18-5. Amanda Gaffey hit a two-run homer for Kennedy and Maddie Flesner went 2-for-3.

Cougars, Hawks play longball in split

The Prairie and Kennedy softball teams combined for six home runs during a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Kennedy Monday night, but one in particular stood out.

Kennedy’s Amanda Gaffey, who had been in a minor hitting slump, smoked a grand slam in the fourth inning of the nightcap as the Cougars beat Prairie, 10-3.

Prairie slugged its way to a 7-2 victory in the opening game.

The Cougars began the fourth inning of the nightcap with a 3-2 lead. Taylor Wagner, Matison Schwartzhoff and Lauren Kubovec had consecutive hits, with Kubovec driving in Wagner for a 4-2 advantage.

Two batters later, Peyton Baskerville hit another single for a 5-2 lead. Then Gaffey stepped to the plate and sent the ball sailing over the fence in right center for four runs.

“I hadn’t been hitting very well before that, so I knew I just had to relax up there and wait for a good pitch,” said Gaffey. “It felt good.”

With one swing of her bat, she broke out of a slump and propelled the Cougars to victory.

“She is one of those hitters who can come in during a clutch situation and get the job done for us when we have runners on,” said Kennedy Coach Katie Bova.

Gaffey wasn’t the only Cougar who righted the ship after a sluggish first game. Kennedy (6-12, 4-8) totaled 14 hits in the nightcap and each Cougar starter had at least one hit.

“We got on them right away in the second game and were pretty pumped up,” said Gaffey. “We were more aggressive at the plate and didn’t hold back.”

They also had a solid performance from a young pitcher. Freshman Madeline Crist took the ball for the Cougars and went the full seven innings for the victory. While she did allow 12 hits, she gave up only three runs.

“She is feisty, and she doesn’t give up very easily,” said Bova. “She has a couple of different pitches that she can throw in there and whip around.”

Prairie enjoyed some slugging of its own. The Hawks (3-12, 2-8) collected 15 hits in the opener and 12 more in the nightcap. Brittany Lash and Gabby Carter hit two home runs apiece during the doubleheader.

Prairie hit three of those homers in the first game in its 7-2 victory to support a strong pitching performance by Katelyn Kuch. Kuch worked with a speedy fastball and allowed two runs on eight hits.

Lash and Carter both hit line-drive home runs in the fourth inning, and Carter added a solo shot in the seventh to seal the victory.

Taylor Wagner hit a home run for Kennedy in the opener.
