Xavier girls clipped in tennis meets

Maddie Abu-Nameh and Sarah Abu-Nameh won both of their singles matches  for the Xavier girls tennis team Saturday in Mississippi Valley Conference meets against Kennedy and Washington.

Maddie Abu-Nameh won her matches at No. 4 singles, 10-4 and 10-7.  Sarah Abu-Nameh claimed her contests at No. 5 singles, 10-1 and 11-9.

Xavier dropped both of the meets. The Saints were trimmed by Kennedy,  5-4, and lost to Washington, 7-2.

Ross, Benedict named Coaches of Year

Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls swimming coach John Ross and former Kennedy girls tennis coach Joe Benedict have been named Iowa Coaches of the Year for the 2014-15 school year.

The awards are made in conjunction with a program run by the National High School Federation. Ross and Benedict are now eligible for sectional and national recognition.

The honor recognizes coaches for significant achievement in their sport throughout their careers.

Kennedy girls fall to City High

ELDRIDGE - The Kennedy girls tennis team lost to Iowa City High, 5-0, in the Class 2A regional semifinals in Eldridge Saturday.

Eve Small defeated Shelby Cook, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.

Kennedy girls top Jefferson, 7-2

Shelby Cook defeated Kiley Jonas, 10-4, at No. 1 singles Tuesday as Kennedy topped Jefferson 7-2 in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at Kennedy.

Veena Venkatesh, Gabby Olejniczak, Lauren Gifford and Aubree Langhurst also won their singles matches for the Cougars.

The Kennedy girls tennis team lost only five games all day and blanked Waterloo East, 9-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Kennedy Wednesday.

Shelby Cook blitzed Laquinnesias Harris, 10-0, at No. 1 singles.
