Hempstead win helps out Cougars

DUBUQUE - Dubuque Hempstead beat Dubuque Wahlert, 8-7, Wednesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball game at Hempstead.

The Mustangs' win dropped Wahlert (27-8, 18-6) one game behind Cedar Rapids Kennedy (26-8, 19-5) in the Mississippi Division race with two games to play.

Wahlert, ranked third in Class 3A, closes out its conference season Friday at home with a doubleheader against Valley Division co-leader Cedar Rapids Xavier (24-8, 17-7). The Saints are ranked No. 9 in Class 4A.

Kennedy finishes the conference season Friday night with a doubleheader at Waterloo West.

Happel named Mississippi Division soccer athlete of the year

Kennedy senior Shauna Happel was named Mississippi Division girls soccer athlete of the year in a vote of Mississippi Valley Conference coaches.

There were 16 Metro athletes named to first teams, nine in the Mississppi Division and seven in the Valley Division.

Kennedy, Washington, Linn-Mar and Xavier had three representatives on the first team, Jefferson and Prairie two apiece.

Kennedy's Homer Screws was named Mississippi Division coach of the year.

Iowa City West had four girls on the Valley Division first team. West's Emma Winstead was athlete of the year and Dave Rosenthal coach of the year.

Wash places 2 girls on MVC tennis 1st team

Washington's Katie Hammond and Kristin King were unanimous first team selections for the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division girls tennis team released Tuesday.

Kennedy's Jackie Pedersen and Linn-Mar's Katie Rakers also were unanimous picks for the Mississippi Division first team.

Xavier's Lisa Cowden and Jefferson's Anna Streigel were first team picks in the Valley Division.

Sarah Dalton of Dubuque Wahlert was chosen the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year. Iowa City West's Lola White-Baer won the same honor in the Valley Division.

Washington's Dan Reyner was Mississippi Division Coach of the Year. Kay DiLeo of Iowa City West was the Valley Division winner.

MVC boys soccer all-conference

Xavier senior Zach Smith, who led the Saints to a season-long No. 1 ranking and a co-share of the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division title, has been named the Valley Division boys soccer athlete of the year.

Smith, who is out for the state tournament after suffering a knee injury, was joined on the first team by teammates Michael Tessmer and Tim Bouchard. Other Metro athletes on the first team are Prairie's Colyn Snyder and Brady Anderson, and Jefferson keeper Andrew Patience. Xavier's Amir Hadzic is the Valley Division coach of the year.

Metro scoring leader Garet Christianson of Kennedy and his brother Gabe Christianson are on the Mississippi Division first team. Other Metro athletes on the first team are Washington's Austin Bergstrom, Brandon Besong and Camron Harrison, and Linn-Mar's Braxton Lancial. Athlete of the year is Iowa City High's J.D. McCullough and City High's Jose Michel Fajardo is coach of the year.

MVC tennis honor for Kennedy's Galbraith

Kennedy junior Riley Galbraith, who played both tennis and soccer for the Cougars this spring, has been named the Mississippi Division tennis Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Galbraith was joined on the Mississippi Division first team by Washington senior Charlie Hammond, Linn-Mar junior Tyler McCann and freshman Brady Anderson, and Dubuque Wahlert's Jon Moore and Brandon Schneider. Galbraith, McCann, Anderson and Moore were unanimous selections.

Two Metro players were named to the Valley Division first team: Xavier junior Noah Schmall and Jefferson junior Eddie Segarra. They were joined by Iowa City West sophomore Kyle Appel and freshman Blake Oetting, Hempstead juniro Nick Johnson and Cedar Falls soph Roy Ju. Appel, Oetting, Johnson and Ju were unanimous selections. Appel was the Valley Division Athlete of the Year.

Linn-Mar's Chris Wundram and Iowa City West's Mitch Gross were named coaches of the year in their respective divisions.
