Botkin tops all-Metro basketball team

Stephanie Botkin of Kennedy has been named the Athlete of the Year on the all-Metro girls basketball team.

Botkin, a senior, helped the Cougars reach the regional finals of the Class 5A postseason tournament.

Kandis O'Donnell of Washington, Lela Sellers of Kennedy, Kennedy Dighton of Jefferson, Morgan Breitbach of Xavier, Amanda Ollinger of Linn-Mar and Chloe Rice of Marion joined Botkin on the first team.

Corby Laube of Marion was named the Metro Coach of the Year.

Wenger tops all-Metro wrestling team

Josh Wenger of Cedar Rapids Prairie has been named the Outstanding Wrestler on the all-Metro wrestling team.

Wenger captured the Class 3A state title at 138 pounds in Des Moines Saturday night and helped Prairie finish fourth in the team standings.

Dick Briggs and Matt Orton of Jefferson were named the Coaches of the Year.

The All-Metro teams were selected by the Metro coaches.

Metro bowlers lead all-MVC teams

All of the top bowlers in the Mississippi Valley Conference this year are from high schools in Cedar Rapids.

Victor Baccam of Jefferson, Caleb Miller of Xavier, Rylea Bennett of Jefferson and Rylee Blood of Prairie have been honored as the Athletes of the Year on the Mississippi Valley Conference squads.

Baccam has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division in boys bowling and Miller earned the same honor in the Mississippi Division.

Bennett has been saluted as the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division in girls bowling and Blood earned the same honor in the Mississippi Division.

Hunter Sturtz of Jefferson, Kaleb Foye of Linn-Mar, Sam Crawford of Linn-Mar and Bryan Cline of Washington also earned first-team honors in boys bowling. Alyssa Wiedemeier of Kennedy, Alexis Tschantz of Linn-Mar, Shania Christensen of Washington and Kayla Thompson of Xavier also earned first-team honors in girls bowling.

Miller, Blood top all-Metro bowling

Caleb Miller of Xavier and Rylee Blood of Prairie have been named the Athletes of the Year on the 2015 all-Metro bowling teams.

Victor Baccam of Jefferson, Sam Crawford of Linn-Mar, Bryan Cline of Washington, Hunter Sturtz of Jefferson and Kaleb Foye of Linn-Mar joined Miller on the all-Metro first team in boys bowling.

Rylea Bennett of Jefferson, Bre Smith of Marion, Shania Christiansen of Washington, Alyssa Wiedemeier of Kennedy and Kayla Thompson of Xavier joined Blood on the all-Metro first team in girls bowling.

Morgan Allee honored by MVC in softball

Indiana State shortstop Morgan Allee was named the Softball Player of the Week by the Missouri Valley Conference on Monday.

Allee, a senior from Cedar Rapids Jefferson, hit 8-for-16 in five games last week with two home runs, two doubles, eight runs scored and three stolen bases.

Allee is hitting .375 this season with five home runs, 23 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. Indiana State is 22-19 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
