Xavier girls maintain top spot in poll

Lie it has been all season, Xavier once again was ranked No. 1 Thursday in the Class 2A soccer poll released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Three Metro teams are ranked in the top 10 of the Class 3A poll. Kennedy, which knocked off then No. 1 Iowa City West Saturday, moved up one spot to No. 6. Washington, which handed Xavier its only loss of the season Saturday, stayed at No. 8. Linn-Mar fell one spot to No. 10.

Jefferson also is ranked in the 3A poll at No. 12, up one spot from last week.

Kennedy plays at Linn-Mar tonight (Thursday) and Jefferson battles Washington at Kingston Stadium. Kennedy plays at No. 1 Xavier tomorrow (Friday) at 4:15 p.m.

Marion boys continue climb in polls

The Marion boys soccer team continues to move up the poll, pulling in at No. 9 in this week's Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association Class 2A rankings.

Marion (8-0) broke into the rankings two weeks ago at No. 15. The Indians moved up to 13 last week.

Xavier continues to lead the 2A poll. The Saints have been ranked No. 1 since the start of the season. They again received all nine first-place votes.

Washington held on to the No. 5 spot in Class 3A, but Kennedy slid two spots to No. 6. Linn-Mar fell three spots to No. 15.

Kennedy plays at Linn-Mar tonight (May 5) and the Cougars host Xavier Friday night (May 6). Washington hosts Jefferson tonight at Kingston Stadium.

Pairing set for girls team tennis tournament

Five of the Metro's six Class 2A teams have received byes into the second round of the Class 2A girls regional team tennis tournament, according to pairings released Friday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Prairie is the only Metro team in Class 2A not receiving a first-round bye. The Hawks host Waterloo East in a Region 4 first-round meet on May 14. The winner advances to play at Iowa City West on May 21.

Two Metro teams received byes in Region 4 and also will start team play on May 21. Kennedy will host either Cedar Falls or Mason City and Xavier will play either Bettendorf or Davenport Central, also at Kennedy. Those matches start at 9 a.m. and the winners will play for the regional championship at 1 p.m.

Three Metro teams have first-round byes in Region 3. Washington plays either North Scott or Iowa City High on May 21 at Pleasant Valley at 9 a.m. The winner of that meet will play either Pleasant Valley, Davenport North or Davenport West in the regional final at 1 p.m.  Linn-Mar and Jefferson play at Clinton on May 21. The Lions play either Burlington or Muscatine and the J-Hawks either Clinton or Dubuque Hempstead. The regional final is at 1 p.m.

The two champions from each of the four regions play each other in the first round of the state team tournament May 23 at various sites.  The state semifinals and finals are June 5 at the University of Iowa Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex at Iowa City.

Marion received a first-round bye in the Class 1A team tournament. The Indians will play either Maquoketa or Camanche at 1 p.m. on May 14. Those two teams will at 9 a.m. at Marion.  Regional semifinals are May 21, finals May 23 and the first round of the state tournament is May 24. The semifinals and finals of the Class 1A state team tournament are June 5 at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.
