IGHSAU announces golf regional assignments

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released assignments for next month's girls district and regional golf tournaments.

Classes 1A, 2A and 3A will play district meets May 16. Regionals will be held in all four classes on May 23.

Jefferson, Kennedy, Prairie and Linn-Mar will play in the Class 4A Region 3 meet at Jones Park at 11:30 a.m. on May 23. Others in the field are Cedar Falls, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior, Iowa City High, Ottumwa, Waterloo West, Waverly-Shell Rock and Western Dubuque.

Washington and Xavier are in the Class 4A Region 4 meet at Glynns Creek Golf Course in Longwood. Others in the field are Bettendorf, Burlington, Clinton, Davenport Central, Davenport North, Davenport West, Muscatine, North Scott and Pleasant Valley.

The Class 4A state tournament is May 31-June 1 at River Valley Golf Course in Adel.

Regional assignments made in girls tennis

Assignments for the Class 1A and 2A regional girls tennis tournaments have been released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Metro teams will not see much of each other.

The six Class 2A teams have been spread across four regions and Marion is playing in the Class 1A tournament.

Washington and Xavier will play in Region 5 at Waterloo West.  They will be joined by Cedar Falls, Mason City/Newman, Waterloo East and Waterloo West/Walnut Ridge.

Prairie will play in Region 6 at Pleasant Valley. Others in that region are Clinton/Prince of Peace, Davenport Central, Davenport North, Davenport West and Pleasant Valley.

Kennedy and Linn-Mar are in Region 7 at Eldridge. Others in the region are Bettendorf/Rivermont/Morning Star, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior and host North Scott.

Jefferson is in Region 8 at the University of Iowa Tennis Center in Iowa City. The other teams are Burlington, Iowa City High/West Branch, Iowa City West/Clear Creek Amana, Muscatine/Wilton and Ottumwa.

Marion is in the Class 1A Region 4 tournament hosted by defending state champion Waterloo Columbus. The others in the region are AGWSR, Independence, Oelwein, South Tama, Union, Waterloo Columbus/Don Bosco and Western Dubuque.

Regional team competition starts Saturday, May 14.

Regional singles and doubles tournaments are May 19 at 9 a.m.

Xavier girls remain No. 1 in soccer poll

The Xavier girls soccer team is still ranked No. 1 in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union polls released Thursday.

The Saints (5-0) are among four Metro teams in the rankings. Linn-Mar is fifth, Kennedy ninth and Washington 10th in Class 3A. Jefferson and Prairie, ranked 14th in 3A and 12th in 2A, respectively, a week ago dropped out of the rankings.

Xavier, Linn-Mar and Kennedy held their spots in the polls. Washington dropped two spots from last week's rankings.

West Des Moines Valley is ranked No. 1 and Iowa City West No. 2 in Class 3A.

Pleasant Valley is ranked second behind Xavier in Class 2A.

Union of LaPorte City is No. 1 in 1A, followed by Dubuque Wahlert.

Marion breaks into rankings

Undefeated Marion (4-0) broke into the Class 2A rankings at No. 15 in the polls released by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Xavier (4-1-1) remained No. 1 in Class 2A.

Three Metro teams are ranked in the Class 3A poll. Kennedy is fourth, Washington seventh and Linn-Mar 12th.

West Des Moines Valley, despite a loss to Pleasant Valley last weekend, remains the top ranked team in Class 3A.
