Baker, Briggs, Foreman win mat titles

VAN HORNE - Brenden Baker and Kyle Briggs of Cedar Rapids Jefferson won individual titles at the Benton Community wrestling tournament Saturday in Van Horne.

Will Foreman of Cedar Rapids Washington claimed the 126-pound title for the Warriors.

Baker claimed top honors at 120 pounds with a 4-0 victory over Jacob Fenske of Davenport Assumption in the finals. Baker collected two quickpins in 46 seconds and 25 seconds before blanking Fenske, raising his record to 20-4.

Briggs raised his record to 24-0 by winning the 152-pound title. Briggs collected a technical fall and two pins before topping Nick Johnson of Davenport Assumption, 12-6, in the finals.

Zaugg paces Saints past Kitzmiller

The Xavier girls bowling team edged Jefferson 2,426 pins to 2,311 in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet Friday at May City Bowl.

Tanya Zaugg had a 204 game and a 365 series for the J-Hawks.

Megan Kitzmiller had a 242 game and a 435 series to lead Jefferson.

Sturtz powers J-Hawks by Saints

Hunter Sturtz rolled a 239 game and a 450 series to lead the Jefferson boys bowling team in a 2,918-2,622 win over Xavier on Friday at May City Bowl.

Charlie Hart had a 197 game and a 389 series to lead the Saints.

Jefferson boys nipped by Senior

The Jefferson J-Hawks staged a strong rally Friday night before falling to Dubuque Senior, 48-47, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks trailed by 11 points at intermission, 31-20, before storming back and falling a point short.

Dennis McKinney scored 11 points for Jefferson (3-7). James Brown had 10 points.

Carter Stevens and Matt Hendricks scored 13 points apiece for Dubuque Senior (6-3).

Dighton helps Jeff girls beat Rams

DUBUQUE – Kennedy Dighton scored 17 points to lead the Jefferson girls basketball team over Dubuque Senior, 68-51, Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Senior.

The J-Hawks fell behind 23-12 in the first quarter, but they went on a 23-9 run in the second quarter for a 35-32 halftime lead. Jefferson pulled away in the second half.

Sammy Kitterman scored 10 points for Jefferson (6-5). Emily Oler had nine points and eight rebounds. Kylie Wise and Erin Kuba each had nine points.

Emily Mott scored 15 points to lead the Rams (2-10) and Kai Biehl added 12 points.

No. 6 J-Hawks fall to No. 4 Mustangs

DUBUQUE – The sixth-ranked Jefferson wrestling team recorded four pins but lost to fourth-ranked Dubuque Hempstead, 42-29, in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet Thursday at Hempstead.

Joseph Sibomana (120 pounds), Brenden Baker (126), Tavian Rashed (160) and Nick Dreckman (195) had pins for the J-Hawks. Kyle Briggs collected a 21-6 technical fall in 5:06 at 152.

Jeff swimmers fall to City High

The Jefferson boys swimming team won five events in a 101-69 loss to Iowa City High on Tuesday at Jefferson.

Max McChesney won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 56.74 seconds for the J-Hawks. Luke Hummell took the 50 freestyle in 23.83 and Ryan Martin won the 100 freestyle in 53.03.

Jefferson also claimed the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Jeff boys dunked by IC West

IOWA CITY – Royshawn Webb scored 19 points to lead the Jefferson boys basketball team in a 76-50 loss to Iowa City West on Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Iowa City.

The Trojans led 21-4 after the first quarter.

Devontae Lane had 17 points to lead West (6-2).

Jefferson fell to 3-6.

Jeff girls trimmed by IC West

The Jefferson girls basketball team faltered in the second half and lost to No. 15 Iowa City West, 61-56, Tuesday at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks led 30-25 at halftime, but the Women of Troy opened the second half with a 14-7 run in the third quarter and had a 22-19 advantage in the fourth period.

Kennedy Dighton had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Jefferson (5-5). Kylie Wise and Erin Kuba added 12 points apiece.

Rachel Saunders scored 13 points for the Women of Troy (7-1). Lauren Zacharias had 12 points, Maddie Huinker had 11 and Emma Koch added 10.

Donner sizzles as J-Hawks nip Cougars

Chaise Donner rolled a big 493 series Monday to help the Jefferson J-Hawks trim Kennedy, 2943-2919, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

Donner began the meet with a 236 game and followed with a 257 for his impressive score.

Jefferson topped Kennedy, 232-183, in the final baker game to capture the tight meet.

James Jambois rolled a 426 series for Kennedy and Aeron Stockwell had a 421. Riley Walton provided a 420 series for Jefferson.
