The Jefferson girls turned in another series of dominant performances Saturday at Kingston Stadium, while the Linn-Mar boys outdueled Kennedy for the team title in a frigid running of the Draxton-Stiers/Wilkinson Invitational track meet.

Fresh from a blowout at their own meet a week ago, the J-Hawks claimed six of seven relay events Saturday and also picked up wins from senior hurdler Taylor Jacobson and sophomore sprinter Lucy Schneekloth.

The Lion boys, meanwhile, won four of six relay events along with a school record-setting run by unstoppable junior Josh Evans in a race for which he wasn’t even primed.

Jeff girls claim J-Hawk Relays

It may have been a surprise to some that the Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls ran away with the 27th annual J-Hawk Relays on a long and dreary day Saturday at Kingston Stadium.

But the decisive win certainly did not come out of the blue for longtime Coach Bill Calloway nor his athletes.

Using a mix of veterans and newcomers, the J-Hawks took five of seven relay events and came in a close second in another to cop the team title over perennial powerhouses Iowa City West and Cedar Falls.

Jenks, J-Hawks double up at Dickinson Relays

CEDAR FALLS - Stephanie Jenks ran 15 laps around the UNI-Dome track Monday at the A.D. Dickinson Relays, took one deep breath and then waited for the rest of the girls in the 3000 meter run to cross the finish line so she could shake their hands.

The Linn-Mar freshman had to wait a while to greet them all.

Jenks won the 3000 in 10:16.27 in a breeze. She clocked a 9:49.24 at the same distance last week at a major meet in Ames when she faced serious competition from Anna Holidman of Waverly-Shell Rock, but there wasn't much of a challenge Monday.

Maddie Koolbeck will play ball at Coe

It pays to be smart, talented and energetic.

Maddie Koolbeck is a prime example.

Koolbeck has been an all-state basketball player during her career at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, but she's been much more than that.

She carries a 4.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale with numerous Advanced Placement classes, serves as editor of the school newspaper, is vice president of the senior class, vice president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Service Club and plays softball.

Colleges drool over student/athletes like that.
