Kennedy boys bowlers fall to Waterloo East

WATERLOO - Kyle Custer had the line for Kennedy on Friday, rolling games of 202 and 234 for a 436 series, but the Cougars came up short against Waterloo East, 3073-2798, in boys bowling at Cadillac Lanes.

East's Logan Graham shot high game (277) and series (450). Dakota Fontes rolled a 253 and 449 for the Trojns.

Troy McKiernan shot games of 205 and 200 for a 405 series for Kennedy.

Cougar matmen split with West squads

Kennedy parlayed four pins and a technical fall into a 53-25 rout of Waterloo West Thursday night in prep wrestling at Kennedy.

The Cougars were routed by Iowa City West, 60-22. Iowa City West also whipped Waterloo West, 68-8.

Shaun Beyer had a pair of wins for Kennedy at 152 pounds. He stuck Iowa City West's John Milani in 50 seconds and took down Iowa City West's John Ramirez in 3:59.

No.1 Trojans belt Kennedy, 77-44

IOWA CITY - The Iowa City West Trojans cruised to the Class 4A state title last year with a 26-0 record and won the state championship game by 15 points.

Kennedy Coach Bob Fontana thinks the top-ranked Trojans might be even better this year.

Iowa City West belted the Cougars, 77-44, in a Mississippi Valley Conference mismatch Tuesday night in Iowa City.

Kennedy girls waste great start

Ally Disterhoft scored 27 points to lead Iowa City West past Kennedy, 45-37, Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game at Kennedy.

Kennedy (8-7, 5-4) was led by Jordan Holmes' 10 points.

Kennedy bolted to an 18-4 lead after one quarter and still led, 25-19, at halftime.

West (12-3, 7-2) pulled into a 34-34 tie by the end of the third quarter, then outscored the Cougars 11-3 in the final period.

Cougars top Ames for 9th win

Kennedy Coach Bob Fontana does not want to reveal how many basketball games he thought the Cougars would win this season, but it's probably safe to say he didn't think his club would have an attractive 9-3 record at this point.

His grin gave it away.

Kennedy found a way to win another game Saturday night with a 58-50 verdict over the Ames Little Cyclones at the Kennedy gym.

Cougar girls fall short against Ames

Jordan Holmes scored points but Kennedy came up just short against Ames, 42-39, Saturday in a nonconference girls basketball game at Kennedy.

Stephanie Botkin added 10 points for Kennedy (8-6).

Kennedy trailed 12-6 after the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime. The Cougars held a 30-29 lead after three quarters.

Heisler earns honor at MVC swim

Josh Hughes has been one of the top long-distance swimmers in Iowa during his prep career at Cedar Rapids Washington.

In fact, he probably could have swum all the way from here to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore by now if you added all his miles together in the pool.

Hughes will swim at Johns Hopkins next year and probably major in biology as he works toward a spot in the medical field. For now, he's set his sights on trying to win a state title in the 500-yard freestyle next month in Marshalltown.

Kennedy girls fall to No.5 City High

IOWA CITY - Mickey Hansche scored 22 points Friday night as Iowa City High defeated Kennedy, 72-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game in Iowa City.

Kiera Washpun netted 15 points and Haley Lorenzen had 14 points for Iowa City High. The Little Hawks (14-2, 7-1) are ranked No.5 in Class 5A.

Stephanie Botkin scored 19 points for Kennedy (8-5, 5-3). Madi Meier added 12 points.

Steady as she goes: Kennedy downs City High

Kennedy hosted Iowa City High Friday night in a Mississippi Valley conference boys basketball game that saw the Cougars come out on top, 58-47.

Kennedy put together a pretty steady ballgame. The Cougars scored 13 in the first quarter and led by five. They scored 13 in the second quarter and led by six at halftime. They scored 14 and 16 in each quarter of the second half and won by their biggest margin of nine.

City High hung around. The Little Hawks would cut the deficit to three points and Kennedy would push it back to six. That is the way the entire game went.

Katie Wampole will run at Bradley

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Katie Wampole has committed to run track and cross country at Bradley University in the Missouri Valley Conference next year.

Wampole placed 11th in the 800-meter run at the Class 4A state track meet last May and finished 16th in the Class 4A state cross country meet this fall.

She also helped the Cougars place sixth in the distance medley, 11th in the 4x400 relay and 15th in the 4x800 relay at the state track meet.

Kennedy placed fourth in the team standings at the state cross country meet.
