Kennedy High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Cougars' upset bid falls short

DUBUQUE – The young Cinderella's spike had a sometimes sharp edge Tuesday night.

Her defense was often money, even against great odds and adversity. Her poise was perfect. Her resolve to pull the sizable upset was unshakeable.

“We really wanted it,” sophomore setter Anna Fluent said.

The only thing Cedar Rapids Kennedy didn't have was a victorious closing technique.

Cougars knock off Assumption, 35-12

DAVENPORT - The Kennedy Cougars danced the Hokey Pokey and celebrated their big 35-12 victory over Davenport Assumption in the visitors locker room at Brady Street Stadium Monday night, but once they stepped outside they were all business again.

They had the Xavier Saints on their mind.

Kennedy (8-3) earned a rematch with Xavier (10-1) in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs this Friday night at Saints Field.

Kennedy Coach Tim Lewis said the Cougars would not be celebrating on the ride home from Davenport after knocking the No.2 seed from the Eastern half of the state out of the playoffs.

"No, No, No. That's over," Lewis insisted. "We just got done celebrating in there. We won't even be thinking about Assumption on the bus."

Hall escaped mean streets of Chicago

Terrance Hall went through some rough times when he was living on the southwest side of Chicago a few years ago, always knowing trouble could be right around the corner.

"I've been robbed before, I've gotten in a fight before," said Hall, a fullback and linebacker for the Kennedy High School football team. "Guys tried to jump on me and rob me.

"It's rough. You have to be a little bit suspicious every time you go outside," he said Friday. "You've got to know your surroundings, know what stuff is about to happen. You have to be smart."

Hall and his family visited Cedar Rapids each summer to spend time with his cousins in the Dixon family - Herschel and Dalvin Dixon, who played football at Kennedy in recent years. Hall enjoyed those visits and liked Cedar Rapids, so he was receptive when his mother suggested they move here.

Lunsford helps Cougars dance to victory

If the Fine Arts Department at Kennedy High School ever stages a musical about a football team, Jordan Lunsford would land the leading role in a snap.

Lunsford is a member of the Show Choir at Kennedy and also performs in plays. On top of that, he's the leading tackler on the football team that's headed to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs Monday night against Davenport Assumption.

He can sing, he can dance, he can act - and he can knock you to smithereens on a football field. "He's a pretty amazing kid," Kennedy football coach Tim Lewis said Friday after practice.

Cougars enjoy banner game against Hawks

The Kennedy Cougars can go ahead and order their playoff T-shirts now and hang a banner in their gym.

The Cougars earned their postseason awards Wednesday night by thrashing Prairie, 42-14, in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs at Kingston Stadium.

Kennedy Coach Tim Lewis, an old-school guy, does not let his team get their playoff T-shirts or hang a banner until they've actually won a playoff game. He's felt that way ever since the IHSAA expanded the tournament from 16 to 32 teams a few years ago, because merely making the playoffs is not good enough for the boss.

Now it's official.

Jacobus eager to play for Cougars

The way Derek Jacobus sees it, he's waited too long to get a chance to play in an important playoff game to let a mysterious medical problem stand in the way.

He hopes his kidney specialist feels the same way so he can face Prairie in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Wednesday night at Kingston Stadium.

Jacobus missed the entire 2012 football season with a shoulder injury and still wears a harness as a precautionary measure, even though his shoulder is fine.

He's had a good year as Kennedy's starting quarterback, but there was considerable doubt about his status for this past Friday's game against Iowa City High after he had urinated blood and went to the emergency room at 2:30 Friday morning.

Moa runs wild as Cougars whip City High

It was a Friday evening of jubilation all around on Senior Night for the Kennedy Cougars at Kingston Stadium.

Senior scatback Miles Moa celebrated his 18th birthday by lugging the ball 34 times for an even 300 yards as the Cougars whipped fifth-ranked Iowa City High, 35-14.

Kennedy (6-3) will host Prairie (5-4) in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Kingston Stadium.

Not surprisingly, Moa left the game with leg cramps with eight minutes left to go, but by then had pushed his season rushing mark to 1,125 yards.
