CEDAR FALLS - The Kennedy girls placed three runners in the top six and ran away with the Rich Engel Classic cross country meet Thursday at Birdsall Park.

Cougars rally to top Saints

The young Kennedy cubs came of age Tuesday night, coming from behind to knock off Xavier, 3-2, in Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball action on the Saints' home court.

Seeming to gain confidence as the long night wore on, the Cougars clinched the match with a decisive 15-10 win in the fifth game.

“We're a young team,” said Kennedy Coach Michelle Goodall. “Tonight we grew up.”

Xavier (10-4, 2-1) had them on the ropes, too.

Davis Sutton has golf in his blood

Kennedy High School junior Davis Sutton was born and bred to be an exceptional golfer.

He was named (partially) after pro golfer Davis Love III, who has won 20 times on the PGA Tour. His father, Bill, was a teaching pro at the Wildcat course in Shellsburg, where Davis learned to play the game at an early age.

On top of that, the Sutton family has a golf shop and practice facility in their garage in Cedar Rapids, so Davis can hit the ball all winter and get new grips on his clubs whenever he wants.

No wonder he's so good.

Kennedy dumped by No.6 Trojans, 41-14

IOWA CITY - It might be hard for Cedar Rapids Kennedy to play an effective game of "This Little Piggy" this week.

The Cougars shot off most of their toes in a failed bid to upset No.6 Iowa City West Friday at Trojan Stadium. West won, 41-14, making the most of five Kennedy turnovers.

"We shot ourselves in the foot too many times," senior quarterback Derek Jacobus said. "And they capitalized on our mistakes."

Shannon seeks happier night against Trojans

Kennedy senior Jacob Shannon has vivid memories of last year's football game against Iowa City West.

Unfortunately for Shannon, all of his memories are bad and painful.

Shannon had the tough assignment of trying to guard Iowa City West receiver Jeremy Morgan, one of the top athletes in the state last year and now a member of the University of Northern Iowa basketball team.

Shannon also suffered two injuries that night, ending his season after just three contests.
