New Linn-Mar coach loves swimming

Tom Belin's sharp, distinctive whistle cut through the din at the Jefferson High School pool Saturday as he encouraged his Linn-Mar swimmers during their races.

Somehow, he sticks a few fingers in his mouth and emits a sound that is different from all the other whistling coaches in the building.

When he isn't whistling, he's demonstrating techniques to his swimmers by twisting his hips or rotating his shoulders and performing all sorts of gyrations, all with an earnest look and a smile on his face.

Jenks runs 41st at Nike national meet

PORTLAND, Ore. - Linn-Mar High School freshman Stephanie Jenks finished 41st out of 194 runners at the 9th Annual Nike Cross Nationals Saturday at the Portland Meadows racetrack in Portland, Ore.

Sarah Baxter of California won the race in 19 minutes, 17 seconds. Jenks, who won the Iowa Class 4A title this year, was clocked in 20:35.

An estimated crowd of 5,000 watched the Nike races on a cool, sunny day, according to the Nike website.

 

Robertson ejected in Linn-Mar loss

The Linn-Mar boys are trying out a new swing offense this year, one that calls for passing the ball around more.

Not having Marcus Paige running the show for the first time in four years changes things a lot.

The system, however, does not call for the head coach to be kicked out of the game.

And when normally mild-mannered Lion Coach Chris Robertson was ejected after back-to-back technical fouls late in the third quarter at home Saturday night it was a game-changer.

Lions crown 5 champs, finish 3rd

MANCHESTER -Linn-Mar crowned five champions but still came up short Saturday at the West Delaware Hawk wrestling tournament.

Host West Delaware won with 250 points. Davenport Assumption was second with 239.5 and Linn-Mar was third with 235.5. Marion was seventh with 55 points.

West Delaware is ranked No. 1 and Assumption No. 2 in Class 2A. Linn-Mar is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A.

Matt Wempen (113), Alijah Jeffery (120), Damon Griffin (126), Joel Northrup (145) and Ross Lembeck (152) won titles for Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar girls fall in OT to No. 5 West

IOWA CITY - Iowa City West had a seven-point advantage at the free-throw line that proved to be the difference Friday night and the Women of Troy beat Linn-Mar, 54-47, in overtime in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game.

No. 5 West outscored Linn-Mar 9-2 in overtime.

Ally Disterhoft led West with 22 points. She knocked down 10 of 12 free throws.

Sara Strauel led Linn-Mar (2-2, 1-1) with 17 points. Kristen Eiles added 11.
