Warriors slip by Lions in gem of a match

The Washington volleyball team practices each day wearing shirts that read, “Pressure creates diamonds.”

And in a dazzling five-set gem over a diamond-in-the-rough Linn-Mar squad Thursday night, the Warriors simply sparkled.

“I am super proud of these girls,” Washington Coach Kari Lombardi said after the regional semifinal victory that puts them a match away from the state tournament.

“They played tough all five games. Tonight, they were diamonds.”

Unranked Washington (28-13) now faces Class 5A second-ranked Pleasant Valley (36-1) Tuesday night at West Branch for the regional championship.

Linn-Mar trio qualifies for state diving

CLINTON - Three Linn-Mar divers were among the 30 tentative qualifiers for next week's state meet during Thursday's regional meets.

Alyssa Deuso, Bailee Seger and Mikaela Lengwin finished 5-6-7 in the Iowa City Regional meet, which was held at Clinton.

Jefferson's Katelyn Canby also qualified in eighth place.

Greve commits to Barry University

Linn-Mar High School pitcher Nate Greve has committed to play college baseball at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla., he said Thursday morning.

Greve compiled a 7-3 record with a 1.34 ERA this past season and helped the Lions (29-12) reach the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament.

Greve, a left-hander, struck out 82 batters in 41 2/3 innings and held opponents to a .176 batting average. He also hit .373 for the Lions, but will be a pitcher in college.

Marcus Paige named starter for Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Marcus Paige will be the starting point guard for the North Carolina Tar Heels when they open the season, Coach Roy Williams has announced.

Paige is a 6-foot-1 freshman from Linn-Mar High School. He helped the Lions win the Class 4A state title as a junior in 2011 and averaged 28.1 points as a senior in 2012, helping the Lions place fourth at the state meet.

North Carolina hosts Shaw in an exhibition game Friday night and will open the regular season against Gardner-Webb on Friday, Nov. 9.

Jenks, Pritts top all-MVC cross country teams

Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division for the Mississippi Valley Conference girls cross country team.

Linn-Mar teammates Amber Decker, Rachel Perry and Maddie Saville joined Jenks on the Valley Division first team. Shannon Gorman of Washington also made the first unit.

Kennedy teammates Alyssa Averhoff, Allison Culver and Katie Wampole were named first team in the Mississippi Division.
