LM's Wyant tosses no-hitter in sweep

Ryan Wyant threw a five-inning no-hitter as Linn-Mar blanked Waterloo East, 13-0, in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday night at Linn-Mar.

The Lions held on to win the nightcap, 5-4.

Wyant struck out six and walked two. He also had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Caleb Reimer had three hits for the Lions while Jackson Jacobs and Brandon Homewood had two apiece.

Ben Larson had three hits and scored two runs in Game 2 for Linn-Mar. Thomas Niemeyer also had two hits and Wyant drove home a pair with a third-inning double.

Andrew Gassmann picked up the win in relief. Michael Bogert got out of a jam in the seventh to record the save. The Lions are 11-16 overall, 6-10 in the MVC.

Sommer helps Lions sweep Warriors

Linn-Mar shortstop Katie Sommer was a dirty, grimy, happy mess after the Lions swept Washington Tuesday night at Franklin Field.

Her eye-black had streaked down her face on both sides. Her black-and-red uniform was covered with dirt and chalk marks. And there were beads of sweat all over her shoulders and arms.

Yup, it was another successful night at the ballpark for the all-state crackerjack and leadoff hitter supreme. And yes, she was a mess.

"Oh gosh, I know," she said with a bright smile. "I've been in the dirt.

"I do my best to try and stop everything," she explained. "You're going to get dirty."

Lions fall twice to Cedar Falls

The Linn-Mar Lions dropped a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill Monday to Cedar Falls, 16-4 in six innings and 5-3, at the Linn-Mar field.

Cedar Falls scored 11 runs in the second inning of the opener.

Manny Jeffery, Jackson Jacobs and Austin McCulloh had two hits for Linn-Mar in the first game. Jacobs had two doubles.

Jeffery went 3-for-4 and scored twice in the second game. Jacobs had two more hits.

The Lions fell to 9-16 overall and 4-10 in the MVC.

Evans, Jenks place 3rd in Seattle

SEATTLE - Josh Evans and Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar finished third in their distance races at the 2014 Brooks PR Invitational Saturday in Seattle.

Evans placed third in the mile in 4:07.20. Matthew Maton of Summit, Ore., won the race in 4:06.32.

Evans broke the Iowa state record in the mile earlier this month in 4:04.38 at the adidas Dream Mile in New York City.

Jenks placed third in the two-mile run in Seattle in 10 minutes, 6.54 seconds. Bethan Knights of Northwood, Calif., won the race in 9:53.54.

Evans will be a freshman at Iowa State this year. Jenks is heading into her junior year at Linn-Mar.
