Marion doubles team makes 1A semifinals

WATERLOO - Brandon Hornback and Michael Anderson of Marion High School won two doubles matches Friday and have reached the semifinals of the Class 1A state tennis tournament at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.

Hornback and Anderson upset David Lapthorn and Jamison Roozeboom, the No.4 seed from Pella, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round.

Hornback and Anderson defeated Tyler Fischer and Noah Welter of Atlantic, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round.

The tournament will continue on Saturday.

 

Duval sets scoring mark in Marion's OT win

VINTON - Enoch Duval scored the third of his three goals in overtime to lift Marion past Vinton-Shellsburg, 3-2, Monday in boys soccer.

Duval, a sophomore, set the mark for career goals with 27.

Vinton-Shellsburg held a 2-0 lead at halftime before Marion mounted its comeback.

Metro teams loaded for state track meet

First Drake, now state.

That could be the motto for Metro athletes this week as they eagerly prepare for the state track meet in Des Moines.

Metro athletes won six gold medals at the Drake Relays, where they competed against the top performers from all around the state regardless of school population.

Marion girls net win in playoffs

The Marion High School girls tennis team defeated Mount Vernon/Lisbon, 5-1, in the semifinals of the Class 1A regional tournament at Marion Saturday.

Jessica Thomas, Sidney Larsen, Madison Kisling, Kim Spurlin and Abbie Takes won their singles matches for the Indians in straight sets.

Marion advances to next Saturday's regional final against Davenport Assumption at Camanche.

Marion boys breeze to team title

VINTON - Marion won five events and nabbed eight second-place finishes to run away with the team title at Thursday's Class 3A state qualifying boys track meet at Vinton-Shellsburg High School.

All first- and second-place finishers automatically qualified for next week's state meet at Des Moines. Another 12 at-large berths in each event were up for grabs.

Marion had 15 athletes earn automatic qualification in 13 events. Peter Rethwisch qualified in four events - the 400 and three relays - and Isaac Smith, Jordan Garthwaite and Quinn Cannoy qualified in three events each.

Devin LeBeau won the 100 meters, Isaac Frazier the high jump and Marion had three winning relays - the 4x200, 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relay.
